L-JraSlttfrqiS1 tnai i THE JrORNEKU IIEBAlil: TUESDAY APRIL 8, 18S0. SCAKKD BT SKULLS. TThy the Indians Keep Away Prom Bellinglinm Ray. Seattle Press. One very noticeable jxruliarity nf the P.ellingliam bay cities is the absence of Indians and Chinamen. The former are seldom seen here and the latter never. Why the Indians avoid this ydace in not known, but some of the ("Swashes said that the native held this part of the State in superstition through an event happening during the Indian war about 18j!. It ran thus: One night during the trouble with the Kivages, ii; certain camp of white settlers were expecting an attack. The whites were informed by a friendly hut half-witted Indian, who had re ceived small sums of money from j the settlers for occasional services ; he had done them. j The white men, lindimr the sav- i ages would tar outnumliertheiu re- j solved to thwart them by strate-! gem, and this is ihe way it was ac- j couiplished : j The Indians on their way to I attack them, would have to "pass I through a thickly wooded ravine that l.iy on the north side of the' Noosack river, known as thei "Devil's pass." Anticipating the! savages' march, the white men concealed themselves in the gorge. I They were armed, and carried j with them six human skulls be- longing to the surgeon of the : party. The whites resolved to play upon the superstition of the red' man, and for that purpose had they ! chosen this dark retreat of which : the Indians had long lieen timid. ! It was 10 o'clock at night (March J 11, ISOtf) when the white settlers' reached the dreaded ravine. They j hurriedlv stationed themselves with their musket commanding the Indian trail, while four of the party lighted pitch torches and inserted them into the skulls after j the 'Mack-olantern" fashion, thus ' giving them a most ghastly ap- !earance. The lighted skulls were stuck up ; across the path the Indians would i have to travel on their way to) attack the camp. The savages came stealing alon-j; in large numbers aliut inidnislit. and seeing the ghoul-like lire-eyed skulls stretching across their ve.-y pathway, they took them tor hu man devils and lied in great fright, never pausing until the camping grounds of the Indians were reach ed. lue whites were saved lv strate- gem, and the Indians have ever since held a supeistitious fear of this section of the conntrv.
