If he is right, then there can be no private ownership of any species of prop erty, for the simple reason that all things, before the application of labor to them, were gifts of nature, Take a watch spring for instance It ban bad a greatjdeal of human labor exended upon it to bring it into shape, but the iron from which it is fabricated was origin ally a gift of nature, and as such, if Henry ("Jeorge's theory were correct, could be claimed by society at large. The doctrine of natural right was exploded long ago. Natural right can only be defined by the word "might." All the progress made by the world is due to the sacrifice of natural rights and the substitution there for of the' doctrine of expediency. If it can be demonstrated that the world will be better off by doing away with private ownership of land and other property the exist ing systems will be changed, but otherwise not. All of the philoso- phies will prove powerless to effect a remedy without a satisfactory demonstration that the world would be better without private ownership of property than with it. TiiK state of Iowa and the coun try at large are to be congratulated upon the re-election of Senator Allison to bis third term in the United .States senate. He has evinced great ability and .wisdom in the past, and his long servue gives him power and influence in shaping legislation. "When a sen- v I ator or representative in congress fidelity to the trust placed in their hands, it is pimply wisdom and common sense to keep them in the posi tion, for they can wield a con-j stantly increasing influence. Ore gon can profitably remember and act upon this lesson. At the recent convention'of the National Electric Light Associa tion in Kansas City, the subject of electricity as applied to street rail ways was discussed comprehen sively by Frank J. Sprague, of New York, one of the leaders in this new field of industry. He showed that while the modern electric railway jnight Jbe said to have been born in Europe, in its youth and younger manhood it is purely American. In 1881 Dr. .Siemens established the pioneer electric railway in the suburbs of Berlin. The first line established in the United States for actual commercial service Avas built by Mr. Draft near Baltimore in 1885. In all of the pioneer work the sys tem used was that of direct supply but most of the mechanical fea tures as well as the electrical de tails have now given way to other and more efficient methods of operation With reference to the electric street railroad of to-day Mr. Spragne said its strongest op ponents two years ago are now its best friends, and the enterprise, for which it was then difficult to get a dollar investment, to-dav v -a . a . . . aeinanus the best thought and the ! show. ability and most active energies of two great -corporations and several smaller ones. The contracts for electrical equipments involve larger amo.mts than almost any other electrical enterprise. The business done in this year will probably be not less .than $,)00,(KK). Every street rail way in the United States is watch ing with eager eyes the develop ments of the rival electrical interests. The flexibility of the electric system. Use ease with which it is extended, its adaptabil ity t various conditione of ser vice, its freedom from long-continued breakdown, the marvelous advances winch have been made ! in perfecting its apparatus, all j insure its supremacy. About one hundred and thirty towns and cities in the United States have ii - i . . . mese ranwavs in operation or under contract. The roads in operation are making 100,000 miles -a day, and within three months the mileage will lc doubled. As . regarus ianger, uio electric car is . the safes possible vehicle because of the remarkable facility of con trol. Electricity has proved itself ordinary work under the most un favorable conditions. It has done work where it would have been impossible to have dono it with horses. . It has enabled ' the run ning sppeed of cars to be increased even in crowded cities 60 per cent, and on suburban routes a speed of 20 miles or more- lias been made. Experimental runs of 30 miles an j hour on the.' ordinary street car with the narrotf flange wheel have been attained. The riding of elec tric cars is easier than on cable or horse cars, starting and stopping more easily, the cars are ckaner and are brilliantly lighted. The electric street railway h the ! Hazixu in colleges seems to have about the same facination for the average student as does the prize ring and pugilistic encounters for the general public. The prize for originality in applying the art of hazing, however, must be awarded to a score or more of the students of Kalamazoo College, who, hav ing presumably grown weary of maltreating in offensive and un resisting freshmen, on a recent Saturday evening captured, Itound and blindfolded a couple of profes- ShavinglS cents at Vieitck's.
