In some works of fiction we find desperate criminals endowed with handsome forms and features, but when reality is searched after, or when the novelist is a careful and conscientious student of nature, and with his port and bruflt copies nature instead of imagination, ugliness instead f beauty is found in criminals. It is said Unit the custom pre vails among Europeans, if not in sill American prisons, to shave the heal and face of criminals in urder to have fhe full force of the moral expression furnished by the con tour of one and the outlines of the other. A profusion of hair may disguise the head whose shape often reveals a degree of turpitude. A luxuriant mustache mav hide a I mouth about which lurks the evi dence of the basest instincts. It is after having consulted thou sands of heads and faces in many prisons where the worst criminals are confined that the moralists form their conclusions. M. Tarde, a French author, formulates the result of his studies in a lxxk which he calls "Comparative Criminality." The following para- graph is from his work: "Uy its ' .: l . t l ... l '.. : i straight torehead and nose, by its mouth regular and gracefully i curved, by its chin prominent, and its smu never too 'I .ur ! u ! to the head, the classical head forms a perfect contrast with that of the criminal whose ugliness is his chief physical characteristic.'' Professor (Sarofsilo, of Naples, ex presses a similar idea in different fashion : "The wicked expression of the face, the evil mien which is ly common consent, called patibul ary, is very common in prison. It is rare to find a criminal with regular features and gentle ex pression. Kxtreme ugliness, ugli ness that is repulsive, is extremely common among the women." The Russian author Dostoievsky, who for politicsd reasons has passed riome years among the worst crim inals, talks in the same strain in one of his novels : "Sirotkin was the only one of the convicts who could really le called handsome. As to his campanions of the same class (those condemned for life), all were horrible to look at. Their faces were simply hideous and disgusting." Tarde adds that of 27" photographs of criminals of the worst class submitted to his inspection not one could be called good-looking. The repulsive faces were in great majority, and a great part were monstrous. As to Naple, where the men are unusu ally handsome, and the women for the general reason that as you go south the "physical differences of exterior between the sexes be come less and less strongly marked are generally plaiu, the task was more difficult. There is probsibly proportionately a greater number of handsome convicts in the south of Italy than in the northern coun tries. Yet the rule remains the name. Any one who sees fit to observe, if he has the time, the criminals in courts and prisons, no matter in what country, will find the rule of universal applica tion. The changes constantly going on in commercial circles, causes new enterprises to spring up, and new methods to be adopted. Nature relates one of these changes, that was wrought almost by accident, in relation to the kangaroo shoe leather trade. There are 6.000 kangaroo skins received in ' ' rri Newark, w. J., every ween- nwy , art- al! tanned in one large estab lishment on Sus-ex avenue, and are then made into 'line slx.es". j Australia and New Zealand furn- ;sia kangaroo hides fur the world. ! The kangaroos sire killed in us- ' tralia about ."DO milen bark from the coast, and an? i-hippi d trom Melbiurne. Sydney, and New castle, in Australia, and from Masteiton in New Zealand. Up to 18!) the kangaroos were killed and eaten in Australia, and their hides, were cut into shoestrings. Put an Englishman named Brown in that yesir discovered "the re markable, character of the leather, and brought several thousand skins to this country. 1 le tried to sell the hides to tanners, but they were shy of the novelty, and he had to sell them at a sacrifice to a bookbinder. The bookbinder inside triangular corner pieces in ledgers ami commercial books out of the skins, and so ascertained the good quality of the leather. It wsis in this way that the large' leather factories were iirst attracted to kangaroo hide. The skin was found to Ik1 very tenacious, and the compactness of the grain pre vents its absorbing water, while the acids in blacking meet with an almost impervious substance. Activk efforts are licing inside to start into life the old board of trade. There is one sure way of doing that, and that way is for every individual holding a mem lership in it to attend each and every meeting called, and assist in pushing forward whatever work may come lefore it. It is well enough to bear in mind that the officers alone of any organization cannot make si success without and active working membership. If von want si board of trade turn out to the meetings instead of growling at somebody else for not doing so. X'ikntikic cxieriiiu-nt lias demonstrated that petroleum can be solidified and transported in that shape. It is claimed that in that shape they are non explosive and inexpensive. NEW lO-DAY.
