AFRICAN CONQUEST. The charge has been made, from numerous quarters, that the object of Stanley in prosecuting his latest African explorations, was not cor rectly stated in saying that he was rescuring Emin Tasha, but that conquest and power was his real aim. In fact that the project real ly was to prepare the way for the creation of a vast British African Empire an empire to extend from the Cape to the region of the Great Lakes, and from that region to Egypt across the equatorial pro vinces conquered under the ex Khedive Ismael and where Emin found himself blockaded after the fall of Khartoum." Of this great empire Mr. Stanley is to be made the governor, and thus occupy the relation to the future, so far as Africa is concerned", that Cliye and Hastings did toward the Indian Empire of the eighteenth centuiy. To illustrate the peculiar views upon this subject entertained by that class of beings who worship anything that is "English ' you know," the following from the .New York Globe is a sample : 'Such a policy may never haye entered the mind of an English statesman, and may be utterly alien to the intentions of Mr. Stan ley himself. It has, nevertheless, great attrautiveness to the day dreamers, and is quite in harmony with the logic of events of the past four centuries, during which time, whatever Paul may have planted, or whatever Apollo may have watered in any of the newly dis covered portions of the earth, Eng land has it last plucked the fruit. It has been so in America, it has been so in Asia, it has been so in the Australasian continent, and it has been so in the islands of the sea. In each and all, English pluck and daring, English persist ence and ability have made their way over all obstacles. When it . vas neither possible nor desirable to conquer a country and to annex it and its people, still the traits of the English have been such that they would conquer its trade and commerce and make goods for its people. A natural result of all this has been the planting of the power, the language, the literature, the customs, and the manners of ' England around the globe so that, .more than a century ago, one of the greatest of her orators could say " that the sun never set on her ..dominion or her authority. It Is only logical that the same general policy should be carried out in Africa, .' With a number of small nations contending for supremacy in certain quarters of Africa, with their demonstrated lack of the colonial instinct, and with the pushing qualities of the British character, there is every reason to . believe that the civilized Africa of the future will he a modified and a oewe. England,--extending .the. language and the arts of that great -country Into territories . now given over to the(dminion of the most arrant superstition to be found any where in all the world." In view of the magnificent suc cess of utter defeat, that the vacil lating policy of England has met in Egypt, and the supremacy it asserted in allowing its bravest men to be massacred in Soudan, and the fact that the phlegmatic Dutchman has occupied and developed more territory in Africa and various other portions of the globe than has England, the ad miring adoration of the Globe is not very creditable to say the least. England may bull dose little Portu gal out of Africa but 6he cannot oust Germany. As for the push and vim that s reads the English language over the civilized world, another nation and national influ ence furnishes a good portion of it, and English oppression and intol erance have done as much to push it as has its pluck, daring and persistence. One of the redeeming traits of the millionaire class of our coun try, is the endowment of institu tions of learning with ample fund9. Daniel Ayers, M. D., LL. D of Brooklyn it is announced has given $250,000 to the Wesleyan Univer sity. These appropriations of money during a man's life time is far more satisfactory and beneficial than the last will and testament bestowal that usually terminates in such vexatious and unending litigation. It will be in order now for some of our leading millionairs to endow oin Albany college, of which we have ample reason to be proud, in such a munificent man ner as to enable it to extend its accommodations and facilities to fully meet the requirements of its growing attendance. The male part of human society are accustomed to rail at the femin ine portion on account of the follies and foibles of fashion. The grounds for their self claimed freedom from the rule of dame fashion it would he hard to ascertain. For instance it is said that the boot in city society is a thing of the past and jet twenty-five years ago it lorded it over the shoe in fine style. Now onl)' policemen, firemen and a few old beaus, who still live in the six ties, wear broadcloth coats and low vests and carry rattan canes, are left to buy and wear the once uni versal foot cover. Even the red topped copper-toed boot, which boys wore but a few years ago, are now extinct and the youngsters wear buttoned, laced or congress shoes. Two bright days of sunshine, after the severe wind and rain storms, which caused the disas trous floods, give the people a brighter look, and reminds that the storms of life makes us appre ciate its sunshine. . ......
