"WILLAMETTE VALLEY FLOODS The Overland Train I'Crderid. to Bun Nj Further Sauth Than Albanj- The Track Under Water. Special to the IIkralk. Iokti..xi, Jan. 2!. The condi tion of tlie Southern Pacific rail road is rapidly growing from bad to worse. The train which is to pull out of the East Portland depot south bound at 4 o'clock this evening will go under orders to run no further south than Albany. One train from Ashland will arrive here about 5 o'clock. A reporter called on Superintend ent Brandt this afternoon. He said the Santiani is rapidly rising and between Turner station and Salem the track is under water. Near Clackamas station about 18 inches of water covers the track. The greatest trouble is between Cottage Grove and. Drain. The situation there is somewhat dangerous. I do not think any serious damage has been done north of Itoseburg. There is no snow between here and Riddles, but in the canyon south of there 1 do not know how much snow may be piled up. I shall run a train ho further than Albany. Nothing could induce me to run one at night over the dangerous stretches, as some of the culverts may be washed out, consequently a terrible accident would follow. The Santiam river has raised four I inches tc-day and is still going up. The Willamette is also rising very fast. Concerning the situation south of Ashland, I cannot speak ac curately, because our wires are all down. I think we are on the eve of one of the worst spells of high water that has been here for years. This cannot occur of course should the foothills retain their snow, but if it comes down all at once, there will be serious calamities. Another gentleman connected with the road said that he is satis fied that there will not be a train in here from San Francisco before the 1st of March. The tracks are being threatened everywhere and nothing can prevent scores of wash outs from occurring. FEOM TSE.SIATE CAPITAL. Heavy Snow in the Coast Ranee of Moun tains -The Supreme Court. Special to the Herald. Salem, Jan. 29. In the supreme court to-day the matter of the assignment of the Lost Lake & Columbia Manufacturing Co., m solvent, Joseph Mebrath and Tatum & Bowen, E. L. Smith and Ed. Miller, contestants and re spondents vs. F. A. Wood, claimant and appellant, appeal from Wasco, was argued and submitted. Reports from the mountains back of Dallas say it is snowing there now, with six feet of snow six miles back and 15 or more at the summit. J. F. Esterhart, of Gervais, an Irishman, aged 40, was committed to the asylum for the insane to-day. A fall received several years ago is the cause of his insanity. Following is the list of letters rema'nin; in thj postoffice in Albany, Linn county, Oregon Jan. 15, 1890. Persons calling for these letters will give the date on which they were advertised. Bensel, Mis Ottil ie Barglebaugh , H. M. Bennett, Qeorge Bigham, M. M. : Burtbelda-Mrs Mary CostiUo, Lary Cox, C. B. Cash, JL C. Ouiiard, Wm. Eastwood, , Will B. Qresfeong, Albert Habin, Mrs. K. A. King, W.H.-2 Lee, T. J. 1 Lockwood, Anna 2 Muller, Wm 6 Maxwell, J.C. Mattson, Isaac 3 Ogle, Uelvin O'Neill. Wm 2 Perker, Mrs E. B. Soloman, Abraham Springs. John . 2 Smith, J. B. Versting, John RUFUS THOMPSON, P. M. - A: Kess)ar liable Scene. Early yesterday morning there .was a long .line of expectant pur chasers; persistently holdipg their places in line outside the doors of the Willaaietto Packing Co.'s gro cery store. Although Albany is a progressive city it is an unusual thing to see a line of staid and sober citizen waiting for a place of business to open as early as .6 o'clock in the morning. This de termined assemblage was occa sioned by the announcement that the sate of pure and fresh grocer ies and provisions commenced early ever morning and that the rule of first come first served , will be strictly observed. THE COHTEST NEXT JUNE. The Approaching Election Promises to Bring Some 'Political Fus, - It is announced that Hon. L. T. Barm, chairman of the republican state central committee will call the committee together in Tort land on March 5th, and that the date of the state convention will then be fixed. Political prophet- are already beginning to forecast the result of the contest in June. There are half a dozen candidates for the i various state offices, from governor down, who are confident that they I are as good as elected, but it is not j improbable that there will be sev i erai surprises about the time the J convention meets. The b:g repub lican majority in Oregon will make I the contest in the convention more exciting man me election. Albany has never asked for very much in the eiection of state offi cers, but this city will have one or two candidates to present when the proper time arrives, who will not take no for an answer, and the delegates from Linn county will-go into the convention with a de termined demand for representa tion for this growing portion of Oregon. In county affairs there is a change over former conditions. The increased immigration has ad ded a population from republican states which will nearly, if not quite, equalize the democratic ma jority which has heretofore been concdeed toLinn county ,and which especially flourished in the historic "Forks of the Santiam." This quantity being eliminated from the election the parties in June will enter the field about on an equality, and the contest promises to be an unusually warm one. Al though it is yet early a number - of candidates, including about every official at the court house, are will ing to enter lor the June races, ana a reasonable amount of political fun may be expected. Bold Thieves. Thieves entered the butcher shop in the Third ward yesterday afternoon during the temporary. ab sence of the proprietor and robbed the till of several dollars. They then made good their escape with out being detected. OB ITU A KY. Died on the 25th of January, 1890, at Sweet Home, Linn countv, Oregon, Dr. J. N. Gilbert. This "is a sad and heavy blow to this sec tion of the country. Previous to becoming a citizen of Sweet Home he had made us several visits, and on one occasion delivered a series of lectures on physiology, which were quite interesting, and he proved himself well versed in re gard to the science of the proper tics and functions of human be ings. When the doctor announced his intention of becoming a citizen of Sweet Home the people were much rejoiced, and he received a warm welcome. He was soon busy ministering to the many afflicted ones in this vicinity. But he him self soon fell a victim to disease, and no doubt in his anxiety to re lieve others he fornrot his own suf fering, and so through his ex posure in his round of visits, when he should have been in bed, his troubles were aggravated and his life WoS the forfeit. The news of his death was a shock to the neigh borhood so sudden, so unexpect ed. The people could hardly be lieve it. His funeral services were held in the Evangelical church in this place, and though the roads are almost impassable, the house was filled with people who felt that a prince had fallen. The tears that flowed from the eyes of many testi fied in unmistakable language that he was held in high esteem by these people. He leaves a wife and son to mourn his loss. Mrs. Gil bert, who is a highly cultured and most estimable Christian lady, has the sympathy of the people of this neighborhood in this her time of sad bereavement. Sweet Home, Jan. 28. .
