Fending the contest to the privileges of the four the bill appropriating 1)500,000 for the work at the mouth of the Columbia river was passed. As 2 o'clock approached Insalls rose to address the senate in opposition to senator sutler's bill to encourage the emigration of colored people from the Southern states. C. P. Huntington, vice-president of the southern Pacific, appeared before the house committee on Pa cific railroads and favored the ex tension of time for the settlement of the indebtedness of the Central Pacific Railroad Co. ' and a reduc tion of the interest to be paid the government as proposed in the Vandever bill. Huntington was asked and replied to many ques tions by members of the com mittee. The house committee on the world's fair to-day discussed t'uc subject and referred it to a sub committee already appointed. Two propositions, one presented by Frank, of Missouri, providing for the commemoration of the celebration of the landing of Columbus in 1892 and the fair the tallowing vear, and another bv Springer, of Illinois, riroposing that the house proceed to select a site for the fair by ballot Monday. The sub-committee, which consisted of Chandler, Flower and Hitt, was increased by the addition of Weltho, of West Virginia, and Frank, of Missouri. The president to-df y made the following nominations: To be supervisors of census Nevada, (Jeorge J. Lammon; Oregon, John II. Shupe, fist, J. W.bt range, sec ond; Washington, Will D. When the railway was first in troduced into England its adoption was greatly hastened by the fact that tbe existing mean9 of transport had long been outgrown, says a writer in the New York Tribune. Goods went by canal, and Liver pool, far example, was full of mer chandise tbe canals could not carry. Passengers hired special convey ances or traveled by ' coach, ' and every niht 1400 coaches rolled out of tbe London yards. If you were in haste you might post tho 210 miles from London to Liverpool in twenty-four hour for f 100. Tbe world was ready for the new order. In America, as in' tbe Old World, the towns were oh the rivers; roads were few and mostly bad, and the chief travel was by water. When the time came for ua to cross tbe hills and plains there was tbe rail way, so we stopped short in our career of read-making, and left tbe great traffic to the rail, and the side traffic ta the "dirt" road. Now at last, we aie lace to lace with a new era cf road-making, certain to cive work and opportunitv to the banis and brains of American engineers for a generation at least How long, for example, should vou say it would be before New York acd l er step-sisters over the waters are not merely connected, but uoited; THE MISTLETOE. It 11ns a History Running Rat'k to The Drnids. Mistletoe is one of tliose plants called parasites. Tbe mistletoe is a gray thread-like plant, and you will some-times see it about' the streets for sale at Christmas time, for, like the holly, it is a Christmas plant, sajs a writer in ' Little men and Women." There, are manv different kiids of mistletoe, but that which glows on the -oak 13 the most famous in English history. In England, although the people think a great deal cf having the mistletoe of the cak to deck their bouses at Christmas, it is not allow ed in tbe churches. Many, many hundred years a?o tho mistletoe was a sacred plant in England. The people-did worship the one true God, but they Selievtd in several evil spirits, and these they worshioed and tried to nlease. For thee spirits they set apart tbe oak trees. Tbe priests were called Druid, and tbey built their alters in oak groves. There they prayed and sang tbeir hymni of praise Dress ed in long wbite rodes, these Druids marched in procession in oak trees nnd cat oft tbe mistletoe with knives of gold. After sayiog a prayer over it, they cut it in short pieces and gave it as a New Year's gift among the people, who kept it carefully. Henry Grady's Last Christmas. There arc so many little incidents ol his life among us which are made up ot pleasure and pain at this hour. Well do I remember uow he spent his last year's holiday season, and the little story be told moot it as I sat in his thee one morning after New Year's. lie had visited his mother in Athens, Christ inas week, and he said, "I don't think I ever felt happier then when I' reached tbe little home of my boyhood. 1 got there at night. She had 6avcd supper far me. acd she had remembered ail tbe things I liked. She toasted me some cheese over the fire. Why, I hadn't tasted anything like it since I put off my round jackets. And then she had some home-made candy she knew I used to love cd bless ber beartl I just' felt sixteen again as we sat and talked, and she told me how she prayed for mo and thought of me always, and what a brightness I had been to her life, and how she Beard me coming borne in every boy that whistled along tbe street. When I went to bed she came 'and tucked tbe covers all around me in I be dear old way (bat none but a mother's hands know, and I felt so bappy and so peaceful and so full of tender love and tender memories that I cried bappy and grateful tears until I went tesieep." When he finished bis eyes were lull of 'cant, and so were mi ne. He brush .d his hhnd across bis brow swiftlv uud said laughingly. "Whv what nr you crying about? What do yn know about all this sort ol ftclirgT"- Atlantic Constitution. Thai does not look much like the gener al was to beananti Quay candidate for tbe gubernatorial nomination in his state. The Vice President put a quietus on tbe silly story of his Lot being on good terms with tbe President by giving an elaborate dinner to the President and Mrs. Harrison a few days age Ex-Senator Kellogg, like most Southerners, regards Senator Mor gan's schema ot sending the negroes to Africa at government expense as a very foolish one and says the solutio'J of the problem will have to he looked for in other directions. Mr. Wa-'.amakcr seems to have tbe proper idea of the relations that should exist cetween a member of the cabinet and the people, as represented in the House of. Representatives. He told the members of the House-committee on Postoiliees ani Post roaas, who paid him a social visit, that he hoped thty would call on him as often as they needed information on postal matters, ana that there was nothing pi irate in the business 01 his oeoart went. The iDllueoza has demoralised the force in the Washington postollice t orty employes are down and tbe mail ing division is fire day behind with its work. WOMAN'S RETTER SIDE. Characteristics Which Make Them Fascinating. The power of fascination inherent in women may, moreovec. be divid ed into two kinds. We all, says tbe Brooklyn Eagle, have seen the old lady, generally white haired, with kindiy, pleasant features, on which time has set no unfriendly mark, who still retains all. ber attractiveness. : Note how the boys and girls adore her; they will go to ber and confide their sorrows, their hopes, tbeir ambitions, and when they would not breathe a word to tbeir mothers. Tbe kindly, loving interest evinced in a lad's affaiia by such a one has time and again first implanted tbe impulses in the heart which eventua.ly- led him on to an honorable career. Quickly, almost bv stealth, the good is done Oy such, and the good seed sown whicii will ripen in after time into a rich and abundant crop. On tbe ctber band, we have most of us seen, perhaps in real life, certainly on the stage, the fascinat ing adventuress who, by tbe enthralling . beaute de diable enslaves men's souls and leads them (on the stage) to dare ail for her sake. Such is directly opposed to tbe sweet old lady in her old-fish ioned chair, and these two form tue opposite poles between which tbe women who fascinate vary. Types differ, and any one you may select has some position between these opposites. Take, tor instance, a pretty and may be witty woman who, bcrdly of her own free will, makes every man fall in love with her to a neater or less decree. She may be innocent of ab , evil intention, but ber position' on the scale is not vastly removed; from that of the melodramatic sorceress. Or, again, take the inBUttce of tbe Drettv voune matron wno, while devoted to home, "husband and children, yet has ' several intimate friends of the male persuasion. But her influence is all for good. Her fascination is exerted in a worthy cause, and she ha- found out a great truth that there is no friendship so lasting, so true and so pleasant us one between persons of opposite sexes, where a true. TfiWSL feeling of bonne camaraderie exists and thero la no pretense to love making. Such a woman, if she lives long enough, bids fair to develop into a snowy-haired old lady on whose friendship the children will rely. DOWN WENT M'GINTY. Most Ridiculous and Moat Popular Song That Ever Appeared. You Lear it everwherc. In parlor and In kitchen, in office and in store; in tbe mansions of the rich, in the homes of the poor. It is more in fee- tious than the discomfiting "grip" and if it is not stayed in its mad career it win soon prove more annoying. "Down went McGinty to the bottom of the sea," That is the refrain of the most ridie- okMU. apng that has "ever bean sprung unon the r American public for yearn, All other jingles have necn driven out of use lor the time being by its catchy air and senseless words. It has neither musieal nor literary merit, and why it should become a popular craze is one of those mj-sterious things that no fel low can satisfactorily explain. In looking for a club Jephthah encountered severl more snakes of the. same kind; the graveyard appeared to be streaked with snakes. Mr. Brill got only two of tho serpents, which were four and three feet long. Eugene Conklin, Bethel bagged a striped snake eighteen inches long, the same day, and Prime Write, of Litchfield, while rata. it hunting on the east aide of Pinnacle Mountain, near Bristol Swamp; came on two enonnus blacksnakes that were sunning on a slanting led.. He pulled his revolver and killed cue of the pair, which was atven feet four inches long, bat the mate; whic.. Prime says, was "altogether tbe Hg geat,' got away.
