The senate committee on public buildings has recommended an ap propriation of $50,000 for a statute to Columbus to be placed in front of the capitol on Pennsylvania Avenue, to be unveiled in 1892, The resignation of the recorder of deeds in the District of Columbia has led to an inquiry into the revenues of the office, and it is found that it has paid as high as $40,000 during the two years of Trotter's incumbency. A bill is before congress to make the office a salaried one. Too much care cannot be obser ved in the giving of medicine. The recent dispatches relate how a jamily in Louisiana moving to a new place found a bottle of medi cine supposed to be quinine and their three children being taken sick with malarial trouble they ad ministered it in pills. The sup posed quinine proved to be strych jnine and the children died. Two love eick 16 year old youths in Atchison, Kansas, who imagined they were desperately in love with with the same girl, agreed to draw straws, the one getting the short est one to kill himself and leave a clear field for the other one in the affections of the masher. They drew the straws and the short straw drawer undertook to carry out the program, but one of his ribs obstructed the bullet aimed at his heart. The methods employed and the care necessary in the production of articles in daily U3e are rarely fully appreciated, our familiarity with them preventing conjecture. An article published by the New York Tribune, in which it is stated that 30,000 geographies were sent to the paper mill by one New York publishing house because of the admission and division of Dakota, and that another house expects its maps of Africa to be left in the cold on account of Stanley's dis coveries, shows some of the tribu lations of cartographers. The great respect in which (ilad ston6 is held will not cause our people to swallow all he says upon the free trade discussion he is en gaged in. The Chronicle say that the American farmers were told during the last campaign that they were being robbed by the manu facturer's protective tariff, but now comes MrGladstone, who informs va, first, that the manufacturers' in protected countries do not make greater profits than manufacturers in free-trade countries, and then foes oh to assure the farmer that if he would only rise ' his political influence to put ah end to protec tion, then it would be possible for the Americans to grow more corn, wheat and cotton and thus' make them cheaper to the English opera lives and manufacturers. This is an alluring prospect, but we do not think American farmerB will break their necks in an eager rush to iealize it. his all powerful dollars and be coaies its selected representative for what should be the most honor able position in its gift, a position that should bo filled by learned statesmen only. Most certainly this action of the legislature of Ohio should lead on to the amend in nf flip constitution of the United States, so that United States senators he elected by a direct vote of the people mue than any other action of recent date. Brice's election demonstrates in an emphatic manner the tendency constaatly extending to make the United states senate an aristocratic body whose inherent power de pends entirely upon the length of the mirses of its members. Tins is a most dangerous condition of affairs and the only way to remedy it is to place the election of its members lit the hands of the people and take it out of the hands of the state legislatures. It will take a strong fight and a long tight to accomplish that end, but if the people pull together in demanding a constitutional amendment they can finally accomplish it. The Celebrated BEFORE ) 5 ... Z2 I r yr o3 AFTER ylbah The congressional consideration of the question of the World's Fair hill, it is said is fast developing the intention of postponing the fair from 1892 to 1S95. It is said that members of both parties object to an exposition in 1802, because it is a Presidential year. Onrt of the Southern senators declared that there would be an almost unani mous vote from that section in fayor of postponement for political reasons, for they did nt purpose to intrust the present administra tion with the expenditure of ten or fifteen millions of money during a Presidential campaign. The re publicans object to the fair in 1892, for the reason that the working men engaged upon the buildings and the other employes might furnish a powerful factor in the election. The important question, therefore, before the senate is when the fair shall be held, but the Chicago people say that it makes no difference to them. They wane me location, whether it is held in 1892 or 1895, and want it settled right away. tn! tceueruUte urana t eiMier sc Hliciiicr arisiui; from the excessive use cf stimulant, tobacco or opium, or through 3 outhful imlis cretion, over indulgence, etc., such a lo.-'Hof Brain Power, Wakcfu'ncss, Bearing Dawn Pains in the llack, Seminal Wiakncss, lis teria, Ner'ous Prostration, Nocturnal Omis sions, Leucorrhoe, Dizziness, Weak Memory, Loss of Power and Impoteucy, which if neg lected often lead to premature old aire and insanity, l'riceyia box; ti uoxcj fertffi.CO Sent by mail on receipt of price.
