Th Elleford-Bropby Co. The presentation of Hazel Kirke at the opera house last night by the Elleford-Brophy Company was not attended by as large an audi ence as it deserved. This play has been put on a number of times in this city, but never in as altogether a satisfactory manner as it was played la3t evening. James M. Brophy in the character of the s-eru old (Quaker mill owner, Dunstan Kirke, brought out all the power, and at the same time all the delicate shades of acting the part contained, and left no room for criticism. Lottie Beaumont in the leading role of Hazel Kiike was simply charming and won a heartv applause. Jessie Norton as Dolly'Dutton played this sparkling, vivacious part to perfection, and introduced some taking songs. W. J. Elleford as Pittacus Green was irresistibly funny, and indeed there is not a weak member in the entire company. To-night they will play Lady Audley's Secret, followed by the one-act farce. "Confusion.' Thero should be a crowded house. Oregon Claims One. The New York Mail and Express says: inirty-nve years ago at Balaklava the charge of the Light Brigade, made immortal bv Ten nyson, took place. Out of the GOO men who went into that memora ble charge, but 198 came back to tell the tale. A roster is kept of those now living who were mem bers of the Light Brigade, and ac cording to the latest accounts there are but twenty-one names on the list. -Of these nineteen are in England and two in the United States, lue latter are Captain Thomas Morley, who is connected with the army Aiedical department at Washington, and Captain Victor Robert Gurney, who resides in this city.' The above must be a mis take, for Oregon claims the honor of having one of these heroes in the person of Rev. A. LeRoy. Bap tist pastor of Brownsville. fell into a tub of scalding water Tuesday and was severely burned about the back and the arms. Re covery is doubtful, says the Eagle. There is considerable steamboat talk on the Yaquina bay just now. It may eventually result in the building of a fast boat of ligh draft to ply on the waters between ' Newport, South Beach, laqu.uia, Toledo, and intermediate points. Lake County Examiner: Latest reports from the desert are to the effect that stock generally are doing very well. The poor cattle and sheep are gradually dying, but those which went there in good condition are faring about as usual at this season of the year. At last a move has been made in tne right direction for the building of a decent court house, and jail in Lane county. Petitions have been prepared and are being circulated asking the county court to move in the matter and are being generally signed. Grady, Jr., brother of the late Henrv W. Gradv. is now at Toledo, Or. He wa? until .quite recently a clerk at the Siletz reser vation. "Died On Duty," is the heading of the Baker City Blade to the fol lowing: Last Thursday Mr. Coop er, the mail earner on the eath erbv-Connor creek route was found dead on the trail crossing the Snake river divide. He hns been blasting for three months in beautiful rock and was about giving up in despair when he was urged to put i one more charge, which he did. This revealed the richest rock ever found in this part of Ore gon, running from $700 to $2000 per ton. He had got within seven inches of it when he was about giv ing it up. Printed by Electricity. This morning the IIkkai.p is printed in its new quarters. The press is driven by electricity, and the building is lighted from the same source, which is supplied of course from the Electric Light Company's dynamos. The remov al was made in order to aflord larger and more commodious quar ters, rendered necessary by the in creasing business and the improve ments to be made in the near future. There is no longer any question as to the fact that Albany, the natural railroad and manufac turing center of Oregon, i3 destined to be second in importance to no city in Oregon outside of the me tropolis, Portlaad, and the",HEiUM proposes to keep abreast with the growth of the city and remain as in the past an active factor in the promotion ot anv and an enter prises tending to promote growth.
