We hav.- noticed in our own 6tate of Oregon, where thirty yeirs ago rival towns were started by en terprising men, ami after . quarter of a century of wony and strife one f the points had to su cumb to the inevitable. Hence, it ought to be clearly seen by the casual observer that a middle aged man in Harney valley, away from the po.-situli vol a railroad, cannot reasonably ex pect to live to see a town of any consequence, even though the friends of such place continue to spend their time and means in working against the great odds that are arrayed against them. They were Charles McLaughlin, under sentence for assault, Charles Seibert, for lewd conduct, Frank Carpenter, charged with selling liquor to Indians, William Han thorn, the insane burglar, Andrew King, charged with buying stolen goods, and Frank Smith, charged with robbery. The mn occupied the cell under the county court room from which several prisoners have escaped during the past few months. They had a case knife and an iron bar with which they made a hole about a foot square in the stone wall, the platt being to diss around the sheet iron platting with which the cell was recently lined. Dan Sprague, who has been assistant juiler for some lime learned of the p-oposed break and told Jailer James.
