COMING TO OREGON The Pacific Coast's Advantas OTerthe Atlantic MUST AGKEEABtE CXIMA' " The Willamette Valley Us ths 'Paradis thelTrnit aad Grain Grewm lasBiiuratwr- Prof. R. H. Willis of The D."- Academy in a recent letter puch!c in the Virginia Orange Observer -r ; I see jtr .Texas correspondi m'h glowing letter about, the advanU. a of the "Lone SUr State," and it jg gests to me te write 'something at-. b Oregon. There is now an imuu tide of immigration to Oregon i-ud Washington, several thousand i-t-day for some time during be summer, but probably a little lees bow. 'l bs cold climate of the northern titi 'ot sUtes from Dakota east drives tli. us auds of persons to seek the ba.iuy breezes of the Pacific elope, and really it ia hard to find s climate nie pleasaat than this. The winters u summers are ebert and mild, an l!it springs and autumns are long. l winter wo had bore less than thixo inches of snow in all, that was an un usually mild winter. Generally tl iw ia snow enough for sleighing ouc uc twice i.e. in Eastern Oregon at Washington. West ' the Casc.-a'. mountains snow ia uncommon. - The Pacific coast is noe low swampy, like the Atlantic, but t';c mountains come right down to tlo ocean, and hence there is scarcely tuy malaria. Oregon is a fine state for grain, fruit, and stock-raising; aad ati.at deal of money is made here from ac' of these occupations. Grain :ui stock are raised in nearly all parti of the btate.and fruit raising isalsoquuo extent ive; but in the Willamette val ley in Western Oregon, for 100 inne-v north and south of Albany, is sat t tie the paradite of fruit-growtra, This business has not been develop ed here yet. as it has been in Can r uia; and fruit lands whose real v..li,o 18 fully equal to those of Clifon.:.v command a oomaratively small pi t-( Daring my travels in CaHfornia at )tarl found unimproved-fruit L.ild gtneia'.ly selling at $r00 t'j f200 pj acre, while in the . There is an immense profit in tl ct--. lands, wheu the fruit is produced; ..u'd people are now taking advantsg of this hero and setting oal large or' chards ol prunes, pcafs, chen -s, plume, peaches and apple;. In L -ii toruia an acre of good lruifc-land v ah trees five years old is 'worth fi-ti $500 to $1000 in a fair location; , U1 tns h not unreasonable 'when a u gle crop frcui this acre seiJ. at J?200 u 400, The tame profit" can hi .made in. Ihe Pacdic coast prunes are grea iy suppenor to. others rsmrf n - ur ooutry, aad hence tho 'demand lor them in Eastern markets. It is safe to say that a fanner h re can easily make to where he can make $1 in Virginia, and so -other -cla-e of industrial workers and nearly U professional men here are better p; id than on the Atlantic elope or Mis -sippi valley.
