city, both of the republican and
democratic parties, mot last even

councilmen for the city election
next Monday, and to elect mem
bers of the city central committee.
The attendance at the various
meetings w as large, and more or
less speech making was indulged
in.

The voters of the first ward met
at. the armory of F company. I).
M. Jones, member of the central
committee called the meeting to
order and .vas made chai.nian of
the meeting. Jay W. (Slain was
elected secretary, ('. II. Spencer
ami l. eliell were appointed
tellers. The names of II. F. Tab
ler, T. J. Overman and F. M. Kcd-
tield were pr -posed. Mr. Kedfield
withdrew, and on the first ballot
Tabler recieved 17 voles and Over
man II. Mr. Tabler was declared
the nominee of the first ward for
councilman. On motion of S. K.
loungiico. n.ii was selected as i
member of the central committee.

of such lands in order that they
may obtain titles to the same.

A Newspaper Knmor.
A dispatch from Portland to the
Pendleton Tribune states: It is
repotted that the Morning Oregon
ian is making arrangements, to
erect a large building up town,
after the fashion of the leading
newspapers of the country. The
plans arc now being drawn, and
the architects will bo called upon
to produce a beautiful building.
It is not known what amount it is
pioposed to expend on the stuict
ure. It is understood that t lie
Oregonian people endeavored to
buy the half block on Alder and
Fourth streets, owned by the Bap
tist church, recently purchased for
$1 20,000 by Heniy'Weinhard, bu
the price was considered too high
for them.
