mac railroad for a few days' duck
fchoothig. It is not known exactly
where he has gone, but it is sup
posed to the Onita marsh duck
hunt ng grounds in Maryland in
the vicinity of Chesapeake bay.

the president was because he did
not know. The president wanted
a few days' undisturbed recreation,
and the only way he could have ii
was by keeping his movements a

Ueimus llolsehay, incorrectly
called Black Bart, on trial for the
murder of Banker Fleichbein, of
Belleville, lUs., and the robbery of
the Uegobie stage, took the stand
in his own defense to-day and made
a confession. He admitted that he
robbed the Milwaukee and North
ern train six months ao, held up
the Wisconsin Central train at
Codett, Wis., a month later, and
waylaid the dogebio stage and
shot Banker Fleichbein. llolse
hay claimed that teyeral years ago
he was hurt by a fall from a horse,
and since then has been 6ubiect to
"spells," during which he did not
know what he was doing.
THE KNIGHTS OF LABOR.
The Annual Convention in Session
in St. Loois.
St. Louis, Nov. 14. The report
of the committee on law occupied
the time of the convention o the
Knights of Labor this morning.
It was decided that on Saturday
the convention will go into a com
mittee of the whole to consider the
stale of the order. Several com
mittees weie appointed, but only
routine work was done.

the quarrel of Old Hatch, chief of the
Piutcs, uJ Cowboy aad his 17 year
eld brother, tens of Old Wash, of
ihe Southern Uta tribe ou the Blue
Mountain range, near a place called
Daublc Cobbinp, The quarrel
originated oyer a Navajsc blanket

stealing. Cowboy denied all, and one
word brought to anaiker until Hatch

boy ana his brother shot him dead.
The Pintes present turned upon the
murderers and killtd bath of them.
This caused a great commotion among
the Piutes, who pulled up camp and
scattered, leaving their dead lying on i
the ground where thsy fell. The
Southern Utea, however, returned
and gathered a large pile of lags,
placed Cowboy and his brttker there
on, together with their guns and
other personal effects and cremated
them, at the same time killing twenty
f ye horses. The latter ceremony was
according to tradition, the lmhna be
lieving that in so doing they assist in
sending the spirits of he dead Indian!
to the happy hunting grounds. Fifty
Piutes are now assembled in the Blue
mountains and 100 warriors from the
Southern tribe have gone to meet
them, and it is believed that a bloody

Noah Shanks met with quitti an
accident last Saturday, while grub
bing near a fence. In striking a
blow with a mattox he hit a post,
and the mattox bounded back,
striking him on the head. It cut
quite a gash ou his head, but the
nattox being dull he escaped
without much serious injury.
What came very near being a
serious accident vecurred at tne
residence of Benjamin Cutler last
Tuesday evening, while a number
of tke neighbors were gathered
there for singing. Soma one acci
dentally knocked the lamp eff of
the organ on to the flaor. Tbe
lamp did not go out when it fell
but kept burning. One of the men
present threw it out into the yard.
No damage was done aside from
frightening the ladies considerably.
