Whitesides, the contractor for furnishing the city with dirt and gravel, was instruct ed to proceed with the grading of the square at the junction of Sec ond and Washington streets, the dirt and gravel to be placed on other streets of the city, under the direction of the committee on streets and public property. It was ordered that the w ork of grading Washington street be prosecuted at once, under the di rection of the street commissioner and the committee m streets and public property, and that when the property owners refuse to car ry on the work that such city otli cers shall ceiamence the work im mediately and prosecute the same until the entire street is graded, also that the side streets be prop erly graded. Mr. s. W. Ross was present and offered to remove till the dirt on the street without cost to the city, but no contract for the work was Irt. The plav, "Ladv Audley's Secret," was admirably presented and the audience was fairly delighted. It abounded in strong situations and some fine scenic effects were produced, espe cially the lire scene at the close of the third act. The play w as unique in having a woman for the villain, in the person of Lady Audley, which character was ad mirably sustained by Miss Belle Inman. IThej; performance con cluded with the roaring farce "Kerry Kotnrh." To-night will be presented "Colleen Bawn," in which James A. Devlin will appear in his great part. The company, under the management of Mr. Goldstein, is prompt in its busi ness engagements, gives a toed performance, and certainly de serves the great success it has scored everywhere. The announcemen that the re nowned Dan Morris Sullivan's Mirror of Ireland and New Comedy Dramatic Comwany will give two f their enjoyable entertainments in Albany Monday and Tuesday nights. Nov. 18th and 10th, should be sufficient to pack the opera house both nights- Dan and Josie Morris Sullivan are the acknowl edged representatives of Irish com edy characters, and the California press, where they have played for ; the last three years, are unanimous i in their praise. Ground Pnrohaafd tor Smelling Work? to Be Established at Gatesvilie. Gatesvm.lk, Nov. 12. Don Smith, of this place, has sold to the Dry Gulch and Gold Mountain Mining Co., or Salem, a tract of land between the railroul and the tantiam river at that place, em bracing about 75 acres, for the pur pose of establishing smelting works for the Sanliam mines. The price paid lor the land was $4000. The company, it is announced, will erect smelting works and a concen trator early next year. , This company has a force of sur veyors at work locating the route for a flume for the placer mines. The canal will he over twenty miies long. ! The proposition to establish ! smelting works here has caused no little interest among the people of (Jatesville, who hope it will be more than talk. l .
