Much is said in public print and
from the rostrum, about the adop
tion of eight instead of ten hours
as the legal working day. The
New York Tribune says that it is a
favorite theory with many reason
ers that human labor will accom
plish as much in eight hours as it
does in ten. To deny this dogma
tically without any investigation
would be foolish, but it is equally
foolish to assert or believe it with
out any evidence. The man who
tends a machine can not as a rule
get more wrk out of that machine
than it now does, whether he
works tan hours or eight hours, or
only one hour. The great army of
nen whose labor is connected with
that of animals can not get the
horses or oxen to do as much in
eight hours as they do in ten. In
a very large number of employ
ments it seems to be obvious that
the amount of work now performed
could not be performed in lei s
time, although in other employ
ments there i3 room for doubt
about it. The labor organizations
do not appear to have investigated
this matter,

If society
decides that it will only do work

there can not be ten bushels

And when it produces fewer things
there must, necessarily be fewer to
divide among the producers in the
form of wages. Every working
men's organization ought to take
up this question seriously, and
discuss it during the coming winter
with care and thoroughness. There
will he time enough to form a
distinct and wel (grounded opinion
whether in each employment the
shorterhours will or will not neces

If so, thejinevitable result will be
smaller wages, less food, less
clothing, and fewer comforts fori
the working people.

(ii KEM Victoria recently issued,
to a few of her titled friends a
charter, that gives absolute and
practically unqualified control and
dominion over the larger portion of
the territory of the continent of
Africa. Whether this instrument
will have all the force and recog
nizance that such things used to
have when kings were omnipotent,
remains to be seen, but probably
parliament will have something to
say on the subject, and even that
may not settle the matter.
