will be built, and the Oregonian Kail

Steamboats on the Columbia and Wil
lamette rivers will connect the points
touched by the railroad. It is re

For moths salt is the best extermi
nator. The nuns in one of the hos
pital convents have tried everything
else without success, and their ex
perience is valuable, as they have so
much clothing of the sick who go
there; and strangers, when dying
there, often leave quantities of cloth
ing, etc. They had a room full cf
feathers, which were sent there for
pillow-making, and they were in des
pair, as they could not exterminate
the moths until they were advised to
try common salt. They sprinkled it
around, and in a week or ten days
they were altogether rid of the moths.
They are never .troubled .now. In
heavy velvet carpets sweeping them

moths, as particles of salt remain in
the carpets and corners. Salt is not
hurtful to any odC and has no bad

Often a sort of scum is noticed in the
basius in a marble washstand in the

become an absolute necessity, While
the respective benevolent societies
are doing all the work of aiding and
counseling the immigrants, the com
mission jiockfts the money. Their
claims for salaries alone for the last
two months amount to over 15,000;
but not only that, every immigrant
must contribute his 50 cents toward
this whether he stays or is eeut back.
Attention is also paid to the bal
ance of the money he brings along.
All who come briug more or less of
fereign coin and this may be estimated
by the average of one shipload of
several hundred passengers at $35 per
capita. An exchange broker has the
monopoly for exchanging this for
United States cuirency. It is very
easy to persuade the owner of this
money that it is useless in this coun
try without being exchanged, and as
he must be a shrewd man born in any
foreigh land who can tell at a glance
how much in dollars and cents he
ought to receive for pounds, francs or
thalers, or whatever foreign coins he
has brought, with such opportunities
and nobody to watch him, it is easy
to make au ample fortune in a very
short time.
