SEVEEAI, PASSENGKKS KILLED lews East cf the Rockies and tie Old World Tbe Chicago Jary Bribery Case- The Hk.rald's Special Dispatches. vJlNCINNATI, Oct. 15. lhe UiOSt appalling accident ever known on the inclined plane railways of this city happened to-day between 12 and 1 o'clock 011 the Mount Auburn inclined plane road. It lies at the head of Mainttrcet and it reaches the bight of between 250 and 300 feet m the space of 2000 feet. Two cars are employed, one on each track, drawn bv two steel wire cables wound upon a drum at the top of the hill by an engine located there. iS'ine passengers had en tered the car at the foot of the plane and a-number moie were in tbe car at the top. The passage of the ascending car was all right until it reached tbe top when to his horror the engineer found the machinery would not respond, and he could not stop the engine. Only one result was possible. Tbe car was arrested dv a strong bumper which stopped its progress, and as the engine continued all its force was extended on the two cables and they snapped like wrapping thread. Then the car with its inmates locked within be gan the descent of that frightful slope. The crash at the foot of the plane was frightful. The iron gate that formed the lower end of the truck on which the car rested was thrown 1G feet down the street. The top of the car was almost as far in the gutter. The truck itself and the floor and seats of the car formed a slrapeless wreck, mingled with the bleeding and mangled bodies of the passengers. Two were taken out dead. Five others are injured, perhaps fatally. One man escaped miraculously with but slight injuries. A Itnttle With Natives. London, Out. 15. Advices from Brisbane, Greenland, states that !Sir Win. Magrtll, administrator of New Guiana, accompanied by twenty-two men, recently landed on the Island of Pemara, were at tacked by 250 natives, who after nard lighting were reouIseJ. Kleven natives were killed and wounded. Heveral whites were wounded. The party then burned the village of the natives. The Chicago Jury Bribers. Chicago, Oct. 15. The investi gation into the nifcthods of the jury bribery is temporarily at a stand still to-day. The efforts of the state are now directed toward the bringing out of the leader of the conspiracy. The examination of veniremen was resumed in the Cronin case this morning. Honors for Kmperar William. Constantinople, Oct. 15. The sultan has ordered the imperial yacht to meet Emperor William upon his arrival at the entrance of tbe Straits of Dardenelles and to escort him to Constantinople. THEFASCINATIONOFNIASAKA A Passible Explanation f the Many Saicida at th Falls. Buffalo Express. ".Never," said sn old resident of the village, "have I known so caanj people going over tbe falls as dur inu the past six months.-' During that time some, eight or line per sons have been known to pass over, three of which bare been deliberate suicides. It is a scarce cf wonder to many people living here wLy person- will cone from a distance to Niagara apparently to cvinniit suicide. The press despatch sent out from Binghamton under the impression that the last suicide was a Miss Mead of that place, says that the young lady visited this place a short time ago and has been ''straDgely fascinated with Niagara ever since." It is a well-known fact that scarcely any two persons hare the same impression when first looking upon tbe rapids or tails. Only a tow erenings since your correspondent heard a clergy man in a neighboring city make this remark: "I never look upon Niagara above tbe falls but that there is a strong desire to get into the water, lie down and go with it. I bare no thought of suicide, but it always seems to me as if it would be pleasant to go with the water." A lady from Rhode Island was making her first visit to Niagara, and was standing on one of the Sister Island bridge, looking into the rapids underneath. She hur riedly took the arm of ber com panion, and asked to leave the spot. Upon reaching the center of Goat Island she sank upon a scar, seem ingly exhausted and very nervous. When aitktd the cuuse, she said: I clou't know what canio over me, but if" I hud stood os .!; b'i.bjrc dt;.-. :l'rr moment urtiiii-g 'u:d b:iv; even lid I".!' ju.iipln ili-o the lapids." "Why", said her iViend, "do you vii-h to coaimit suicide?" "God forbid !"' said she. "It..Tas the fin t best ikought, but there was nn impulse which I conhl not con trol, and I do not think I would dare lire at Niagara." Others hare experienced a similar sensation. A VOl'THFl'L FORfiEK. Hon- Foar-Tear-Olrl Cuinad Hi Liberty. Chicago Herald. Sometimes children are wise be jond their years. Upon one of the South Side avenues is a lady who is the mother of a bright yoor.gster aged 4 years. This yaungster of hers has annoyed her greatly by running away during the day ta the hanse of a neighbor, aVui't a block away, and hiding hiuiM-it thsie until some one is sent after him. Umber than be annoyed in i.twitio" alter h".c, his mother called on the lady whot-wned tn cliiidieo in the next block and came ta an undstacdiug with her "When I am willing ihat Getrgie i-houid call on your children," she said, "I will write a cote to that effect and pin it on his arm. In the note I will state what tim- I want him sent home, and you can act accordingly." Well, the other lady aggreed :o this plan. A day or so later the youngster appeared at her house with a note pinned on his arm. She thought it was all right, and she allowed him to play with her children until she thought it time to look and see when he was to be sent home. When she unfolded the paper she saw nothing bat a lot ot scribbling and she asked the youngster what it meant. "Well," be said, "my matnuta was as'.etp when I wanted to come up here so I wrote tbe note myself." The lady was dumfounded. The wise youngster bad seen his mother write the notes which gave him his freedom, so he thought, as she was asleep when he wanted to go, that he might as well write a note him self rather than disturb her. That boy will never get left. IIOW A STATE IS MADE. The Steps that Will I '.a Nacessary to Admit AVashiajtan. "Toe returns of the varieus counties as saen as they are all in, are canvassed by the county audi tor, probate judge and uuotaer count v elhcer, and if found to be correct are forwarted to the terri torial secretary. The Navy af This Ctnntry Is Beginxing to Assnnie Eespectable Proportions For e:n Vessils Compart cV The recent performance of the ciuiser Baltimore placed - that ves sel in the lermest rank of armed cruisers on the sea. She has deyel- . oped, so far as can be' learned, a speed greater than any vessel of her tonnage class and ever, save one, though it is indisputable that she has been beaten by numerous smaller restels, tb.e TcsuTiua beipi one. Of tbe vessels which avo surpassed the Baltimose in speed there may be mentioned the Keina Kegente of the Spanish navy and the Piemeite of tbe Italian Navy. Tbe Reina Kcgente justly claims the honor of acquiring for ber ton nage displacement the greatest speed yet obtained in a warship. The Piemonte is less than 30fit tons displacement, which places her be low tbe Baltimore. All ot tbe orpedo boats exceed the Balti more's speed, but a comparison can hardly be made between them md such a c raft as tbe Baltimore. There are many vessels in tbe British Navy that have done nine teen knots, several have gone over twenty knots, but in so doing they have not brought their mean peed to the standard obtained by the Baltimore. Tbe Melpomene and Immortalite, it will be observed, apDroach close to the figures ob tained by the Baltimore. For tbe reason that vessels of the torpedo boat catcher type do not properly enter into comparison with a forty-five- hundred-tou cruiser, tbe doings of such craft as the Rattlesnake, Sbarpshoeter, Iji, Vesuvius, Tripoli. 1 Destructor and the torpedo boat Ariete belong in a class of their own. It certainly seems that when Americans are determined to i uild fine vessels they uucceed in turning out models that excite the admira of the world. Th;s wa3 toe case in the d iys of the Old Ironsides. It was true in 1812. Shortly be 1 are the war, when such ships a the Hartford and sleep of w ar Brook lyn appeared, admiration for them abroad was universal. The frigate Niagara was another such craft. But tiincc the late war we have done absolutely nothing except design the Trenton another vessel greatly plaited. With the advent of the new navy we have seen the Roach cruisers tie more than 15 knots an hour. The Yorktown has 17.2 knots. The Vesuvius bas attained a maximum of 22.9 knots and a mean of 21.G46 knots. The Balti more now makes ber appearance with a maximum speed to ber credit of 21.2 knots and a mean of 19.6 knots in a four hours' run. It will be noticed that the navy of tbe United States is steadily coming out of its state of innocuous desuetude and is becoming a thing of credit to the country. itiarealBC nn Cm seem Foe.
