The stories told of starvation in
iiaoioa appear to have been entire
fabrications. The only foundation
for them being scaricity of food in
some districts. A correspondent
of the Clironiclo points out, the
native may always fall back upon
the cocoanuts and wild yams. Two
consignments of forty tons of rice
were contributed by generous
Australians, but i he evil affect of
such gifts is that it will induce the
natives to depend upon outside aid

The practical joker is about the
poorest excuse of a man that can
ie found among the reputable part
of humanity. One recently at
ilenns Falls, New York, played
joke by tying one end of a rope to
a deeping man and the other end
to a rapidly revolving shaft. The
result ot course was the death of
the victim. All practical jokes of
course do not terminate so latally,
but none of them, as a general
thing give any pleasure to any per
son outside of the jcker himself,
while invariably they give pain and
mortification to the victim, and
sometimes to many others. The
practical jokers should all ho lele
gated to a barren island where
they can indulge their jokes upon
their own ilk and no others.

A shrewd and observing writer
in an eastern agricultural journal
says very truthfully that it never
pays a farmer to buy more land,
when he already has as much as
he can cultivate and give thorough
tillage. It pays better to spend
the money upon putting one acre
in better condition and fertilization
than it does to buy another acre
and give both but poor cultivation.
.So to in the use of fertilizers.
Manttiu spread uron one acre vi 1

and when the yie'd of one a re can

economy to put the labor upon the
smaller amount of land.
