YAQUINA SAY.
Prospects for tie Future and Presert Activ
ity of the Towns of the Bay.
Oregon's pleasure resort is to be
found at Newport, on Yaquina
Bay, where all the elements
for a watering place are found
in pre-eminent prolu.-ion. A beach
forsurf bathing as line a. the finest
in the world ; and drives to places
of interest without number are
among the attractions. The gov
ernment jetties on both North and
South Beach are immediately
. at hand, and if longer trips
ar..: wanted the South beach, with-
j out a rival in the world, can be had I

j Yaquina City, the Oregon Pacific
j railroad terminus upon the bay,
j four miles above New port with
which it is connected by steamer
! making several trips per dav.
is finely located and growing
in importance, .vhich is only a
promise of what is to come wnen
when the completion of the Oregon
j Pacific will induce the company to
open ttie matket lor lots ana build
ing sites. Already syndicates have
purchased lands across the bay
at fabulous prices and are
confident of a great city in the
future.
i Newport, proper, has been of
1 slow grow th, but it is a constant
i improvement, and points to the
' substantial future that surely
! aaits it at no distant day. Far
: seeing canitaiit-ts 'have invested

i figures. Property on the water front
mat only a tew years ago was
offered n'r $1',500 " to $.,000 now

The C'orvallis Firemen.
1 he Corvalhs Times says : C'or
vallis will probably send a
hose team to the firemens' tourna
ment at Tacoma next month.
They will begin practicing in
earnest at once and hope to be able
to make some showing among the
professionals. East Portland will
send a team composed principally
of professional sprinters, including
Jack Gillpin, Charles Weinberner,
better known as Jack Gibson, and
Eph, Cameron. Tacoma will have
a team of professionals, led by
Harry Bethune, the American
champion. It would seem as if the
Corvallis boys will be a trifle cheeky
in entering such a contest, but
our boys might surprise some of
th- flyers in other towns.
Wheat.
i he price of wheat remains ('.'!
j cents in this city, and none is sell
j ing. The outlook of the markets
i of the world is certainly such as to
induce farmers to hold for better
prices, there is a shortage in the '
old world and in India and Austra-!
li.i. which must be filled and the !
i niieii States win in- called upon
io supply much of this wiiesa. The
demand for the crcp of this coun
try should create good prices for
wheat this fall. Tno outlook is
certain'y more promising than for
several years, notwithstanding the
present dull time of the markets.
