Matsatil Ransdcll has made him
.-e t solid with the working republi
i ans hereabouts by asking for the
resignation of three of his demo
cratic deputies and by announcing
that it was his purpose to displace
the rest o! the democrats employed
under him and replace them with
good republicans as soou as pos
sible. Senator Spooner dropped into
Washington last week from Massa
chusetts' summer resort. lie came
to fix up some Wisconsin posl
ollices und things, and from the
broad smile he carried away iie
must have succeeded. A reckless
newspaper mau caught him and at
tempted to interview kirn on-the
reoub'icaa tariff bill. "Great
Uio4
mr- friend"-the tjenator re
plied, "1 am going away in an
bur. Wait until I come back for
the winter and we'll have time to
talk it over."
Virginia republicans here say
that the democratic state nomina
tions made last week are about the
strongest that party could possibly
have made, and that the republi
cans will hav; to work hard sad
pull together to defeat thru.
And now there is talk of another
Congressional investigation of the
GoTeinuent printing office this
winter. It will do no good, and
will cost a goad deal of money
therefore I should oppose it had I
a vote in Congress.
It is now thought that the extra
sessioa will be called to meet on
the 21st., of October.

of the court house a $300,000 claim,
dje the estate from the govern

spirited bidding, and finally the
claim was knocked down to Gen

The anginal claim Ben Holladay
presented to the government for

matter the assassin's bullet ended
his glorious life. Subsequently
the Uni'd States senate reduced
the claim to $:;00,000, but its pa: -Bage

time the government offered Beit
Holladay $100,000 for hi demand,
