Hon. (. A. .Johnson, attorney
eenerai Dear sir The arrest of
Hon. Stephen J. Field, justice of
the supreme court of the United
states, on the unsupporff il oath of
a woman, who on the very day the
oath was taken and often before
threatened his life, will be a burn

avowed. I therefore urge upon
you the propriety of at once in
structing the dis'trict attorney of
San Joaquin county to disinit-s the
unwarranted proceeding against
him. . The question of the juris
dictiOH of the state courts in tho
case of Deputy United States Mar

The unprecedented indignity on
Justice Field does not admit of
argument. Yours truly,

Fortune-telling by means of the fiff
ner-nails. onychomancy, as it was
called, was not uncommon in ancient
times. The practice was to rub the
nails w itr oil and soot or wax and to
hold up the nails, thus prepared,
against the sua and upon the trans
parent horny substance were, sup

which gave the answered required.
In more recent times people have
been found predicting by means of
nails of the hand and telling the dis
position of person with certain des
criptions of the nails. However ab-
surb it may appear, we shall give ex
amples of this superstition: A per

whose nails grow into the flesh at
the points or eides are given to lux

very pale nails are subject to much
infirmity of the fles't, and persecution
by ne:ghbers and friends. People
with narrow nails are ambitious and
quarrelsome. Lovers of knowledge
and liberal sentiment have round
nails. Indolent people have eueral'.y
fleshy nails. Small uails indicate lit
tleness of mind, obstinacy, aud con

men, delighting in war, have red and
