Adjoining it was the Kuss house, a large frame hotel, which burned like tinder. The fire communicated to the Northern Pacific passenger and freight depots, burning them to the ground. The Northern Pacific railroad's loss is variously esU mated. The loss, including the f'etght in the warehouse, is esti mated at about $l,Oi)U,000. The Oregonian of the 5th speak ing of the Spokane fire difficulties says at 2:30 A.M.after an all night's work and scheming, the boys at the Western Union succeeded in getting communication through to Spokane Falls, via Tacoma, and over the Switchback, not, however, io the Spokane office of yesterday, but to the Spokane office of to-day which consisted of one lonely operator sitting on a work bench on the prairie, two miles out of town. This is Spokane, Western Unionly speaking of to-day. The boys worked hard and contended not only with the Spokane confla gration, but with forest fires further west which came in about 10 o'clock and destroyed all the wires. Speaking of the case of the two young men lately arretted and lined lor resisting a d-puty United Stales marshal who attempted to eject them from claims they had takenup in the Harney valley country, a gentleman who is well informed in regard to such mat ters said : "These men pre-empted the land knowing that it had been con veyed to another by the state as swamp !nd. as the land is not now swampy they imagined that the owners title to it could not be maintained and that they could hold it as arable land. There lias been a great deal of trouble of this kind in the southe tern portion of! the state, and trouble of thh kind ii likely to occur for years to come. Where these people w ho attempt to take up su.:li land make a great mistake is in thinking that because land is not swampy now it never has been, and that therefore the man who purchased it as swamp 1 ind committed a fraud, and is not justly entitled to the ownership of the land and cannot make good his title. The fact isThat the swamp land act w as passed in 1802 and the swamp lands were bought in large tracts by different persons. The question as to whether they were guilty of any frauds depends upon .whether they were swamp iamls then or not, and not upon what the nature of the land is at present During the twenty-seven yeais since the passage of that act great changes havp come over the lace of the counfrv. The land in nianv places where it is dry now k. - . t.I., ,.r,-.,,i ;n, .. .... i- ..,-,.., of arasa S.nd hnshs. toe I -o J I largo tracts were kept inofct and ci.nt of ,jroiuui. When pummer came the ground became dry and hard, ind the lakes Hot being fed continuously, gradually shrank, and the whole face of the country changed. The swamp land act applied to the lands as they were then.and what they may be now has nothing to do with the case and those who, while crying fraud, attempt to rob the swamp land man of what he honestly bought, should remember this, and before attempting to take up land which has been designated as swamp laud should satisfy them selves as to the condition of the land, when the swamp land act was passed." What kind of a man would call out for a light in a meeting? What does the statutes of Oregon say to the crime of sum conduct, and what is the fine? The article on the face of it shows a rowdy at heart trying to publicly cover up his tracks. Now the facts are a woman was disturbing the meeting by jumping her baby up and down abovo her head. Wo requested her not to do so and some mea spoke out for us to go on and preach. We insisted quietly on order when the woman went over to where there was another woman with a baby and both of them went at it jumping their babies out of spite. We called upon the Cnristian people to see what they were doing and took down two of the mens names. 1'ertect order was re stored, when we had a good time preaching to an orderly crowd of people. After we were through there was some swearing. threat- i cning and bluster among that class j iii.ib uu emu minus, out vtc soon by prayer, singing and testimony quelled their devil-inspired rage and held a verv profitable meeting.
