The threshing machine of Messrs.
A. M. Flory & II. P. Miden was
totally destroyed by lire in Audrey
lieancy's grain field, miles
north of Lexington last Saturday
evening at 7 o'clock, says the Ilep
pner Ciazette. The machine was
threshing after a header and had
stopped a few minutes waiting for
grain. William Campbell came
up with the header wagon and as
the machine started, he asked Mr.
Flory. the feeder, to change places
with him that load. The grain
had no sooner struck the cylinder,
than a Hash like sheet lightning
came out of the machine, and
before wate r could he procured,
was totally destroyed. The horse
power and et raw-stack were saved
with some dilhcultv. Not one ot
the crew were addicted to smok-

accompanied by the admiration
and best wishes of all w ho have
known them here, both for them

pense of a traveler for a San Fran
cisco stationery house, while in
this city some ' time ago he pur
chased a line horse of ieo. L.

well, but he was no granger and
knew nothing of the price of hay.
On arriving at Portland bethought
it would be economy to purchase a
ton of hay, and finding a farmer

w as cheap at $17, hi bought it and
shipped it to San Franci.-co. The
freight amounted to $-1 JiO. He
1 then paid. $10 cartage to Alameda, ,
making his ton of hay cost $4S.(j0.
