The Salem Statesman refers
with perhaps pardonable pride to
the winning of the steamer contest
in this city on the Fourth by Cap
ital Lngine Co. of Salem. A mis
take, however, is made by the
Statesman when it says the Salem
and Albany engines are the same
size. The Salem engine is a ;5d
class while Albany's is a 4th class
engine, and in tournament rules a.
handicap of 50 feet is given be
tween such engines. As no handi
cap was given the contest was not
for the $100 prize, being merely a
friendly contest, which Salem won
, by :;0 feet. Their's is perhaps the
' finest engine in Oregon.

Kricson (4 year old record :30!., fastest in the world for 14 yea:?). The
grandeur of Oncco's pcrformanses the past season of breaking and defeating
the most determined combinations which shrewd men and able manipulators
with fast horses deyised to defeat him, arc stili fresh in the minds of all
horsetnep; but we would remind them again that he was the sensational
trotter both as a 2 and 3 year old, lowing in turn loth records and thus as
suming the impersal purple of Juvenile King of the Northwest. His bull
dog tenacity, never failing courage, indomitable will and high strung tem
perament will not brook defeat, and his present record is as yet no measure
of his speed, as it wa3 made in the mud and ucder the most adverse circum
stances. At o year old he sired 0 colts in all. Three of these were trains
at 2 year old. At the end of (50 days work, breaking and training, any of

races at Albany, and later on one pro veil the winner of the Inland Fin pi re
stakes at The. Dalles and the following season won the 3 year old race at
Seattle. These are all that have been broken, and have changed hands and
brought the sum of $2000. A glance at Oneco's pedigree will with a fair
consideration of his performances convince the most prejudiced that he will
