Carlisle D. tirahatn, the hero of sev
eral trips through the Whirlpool
rapids, announces that he will, iu a
few days, go over the Ilorseshie
talis, which rushes over a 200-foot
precipice, with what little protection
his new barrel life boat can afford.
This barrel boat is designed for a life
boat, and is eleven feet long and
forty 'sches in diameter. It looki a
little like a torpedo, with a turret
amidship, and has side wheels, stor
ing apparatus and other appliances
similar to a flying machine, for
aquatic use. The craft is a cylinder
iu shape, and has three compart
ments, each of which is water ti6ht.
The center compartment is forty
three inches long and forty inches ia
diameter. The craft is strongly
built of well-seasoned oak and cedar
staves, aud is bound with twenty
four iron bands. But it is extremely
doubtful if it can escape being dashed
to pieces, either on the rocks at the
foot of the falls, or elsewhere in tho
fjorge.
