THE NEW WAR SHIP.
News comes from Washington
that one of the greatest trials of the
Navy Department the remark
able action of the contractors for
the new ships. The Tetrel and
Baltimore are months behind, and
the government is exacting from
each a daily penalty. It was ex
pected that the Baltimore would be
completed by this time, but the'
contractors now announce that a
private trial of the vessel's machin
ery will be made this week for
their exclusive benefit. The official
trial is a matter of the dim future,
as it is almost certain that a num
ber of defects will oc discovered
which will have to be remedied.
In regard to the Tetrel the board
to witness her official trial will be
selected early this week, as the
contractors have intimated that
the ship will shortly be ready.
The Columbia Iron Works jot
Baltimore, which has contracted
for this ship, found it more advan
tageous for them to finish a fleet of
ferry-boats for a railroad company
than fulfill their contract with the
United States. They could make
more money by paying the govern
ment the penalty of $100 per day
and work ou the ferry-boats than
they could by finishing the Petrel.
Of course this state of affairs
could not last forever, and lately
the Navy Department has received
word that the ship is almost ready
ior her official trial.
TiiE.costliest of all leathers is
known as piano leather, and is
used solely for covering piano keys.
The world's supply of it comes
from Thuringia, m Germany,
where a family of tanners hand
down the secret of its preparation
from father to son. The ekins that
make it grow upon the gray deer
a species found only in the neigh
borhood of the great northern
lakes. They are worth 20 cents a
pound when just stripped off.
When they come back to us as
piano leather the price has risen
from $15 to $18 a pound.
The wonde'ful iron tower in
Paris, built to adver.ise the expos
ition, is said to be u success in that
direction onl v. For astronomical
purposes it U a failure, as the
oscillation prevents any accurate
observations, and its meteorlogical
advantages are nil being situated
as it is in the heart of a big city.
It will however perpetuate the
name of its designer for it will
alwavs he known as the Libel
tower.
New York city proposes to make
the contribution to the Johnstown

The Chronicle thus refers to a
conference of unusual impo.tance:
The international conference of the
working classes which is to meet
at Berne. Switzerland, next Sep
tember, ought to accomplish some
good result.. It will be the first
systematic attempt to devise gent-rat
rules for the protection of the
weak and the guarding of women
and children from work in danger
ous and unhealthy occupations.
Among other questions that
will be discussed will be the
prohibition of Sunday labor
and work at nighty in many indus
tries, and the minimum age and
hours of labor of children in
factories. An effort will be made
to secure some general laws which
will prevent the hardships that
now frequently result where
laborers are so poverty stricken as
to be at the mercy of employers.

A uueat eensation was made out
of very small material on the ilille
Lacs reservation. It was declared
that the Chippowas had risen and
killed seven men, horribly mutilat
ing several of the victims, because
they insisted upon digging a ditch
across the reservation. Now it
turns out lhat only one man was
shot b an Indian, and Ihe shoot
ing is ascribod to the fact that the
Cuipiewa was insane through
drink. It 1 xks as though the sen
sational reports brought from Mora,
Minn., were intended to xcite
public feeli'- against the Indians
and thus lead to some steps to
grab a portto:: of their reservation.
Chicago's public school can
point with pride to the fact that an
18 year old boy of its training,
Walter A. Scott recently distin
guished himself by carrying off the
medal offered by Congressman
Mason for the best essay on the
proposed water-way from Chicago
to the Mississippi. Thenotewoithy
feature of the essay is that, aside
from being far superior to the work
of other competitors, it is one of
the clearest and most concise state
ments of the prcat project which
Chicago wants national aid lo help
her construct.
