Byrnes owned a mill. Maggie
Post worked as millhand. The

her teens and is the daughter of a
carpenter of Patterson. Her lover's
family was natuially not much
pleased over the promised Uve
match. Mrs. Byrnes, the. ardent
lover's mother, was particularly
displeased, but despite all objec
tions Hugh wooed Maggie fondly.
Almost every evening after work
ing hours he visited the pretty
factory girl at the home of her
aunt, Mrs. Gillam, where Maggie
boarded. Finally the lovers de
cided to get mprned, family or no
family, and Aliss Post resigned her
position in the mill to prepare for
ihe ceremony.
On last Saturday the couple
made an engagement to visit
Father Mondert, of Carlstadt.
Early in the day, while Maggie
was still waiting, a neighbor
brought, the news that Byrnes had
suddenly left cn the day before,
ostensibly for Paterson. but that
nothing had been heard of him
since. Sunday passed and Mon
day came without a word from the
lover. Then the young girl con
cluded that he had deserted her,
f.nd she made a visit to the mill.
Monday a telegram was received
at the mill from Hiti'h. saving that
he had sailed on that day lor Pana
ma. There was no explanation of
Ins absence, no apology to the girl
he had deserted, in Lodi all sym
pathy is with the girl, particularly
as this is said to be the second
escapade of the kind on Byrnes'
part.
Three years ago he became en
gaged to a young German girl in
humble circumstances. The bans
were announced twice from the
altar of the Catholic church, but
before the third announcement
Bvrnes managed to postpone the
marriage indefinitely, and in a
week or two after he left for an ex
tensive trip to California.
Manv persons in the village be
lieve that he has sought refuge in
the .'olden State again, and that
hi.-i dispatch announcing a tup to

John Confer. Some ten years ago

wife, and cause the body to be in

son & Company's grocery store,
W. F. Read's dry goods store, and;
at F. a. Burkhart's real estate
office. All those who wish to avail
themselves of this grand excursion
must purchase their tickets by
