With tlie' notes of the centennial celebration still filling the air and the annual recurrence of decoration day, it is timely to a9k what the century has done for the nation as a political organism. In material aspects the progress of the nation has been without parallel. Its farms and its factories, its mines and its mills, its inventions, ac cumulation of wealth, and improve ment in the condition of the inhabitants are not in danger of being overlooked. But there is a mistaken impression that in its political life the nation has deteri orated, that its methods are not as pure or its aims as elevated as in the golden age of revolutionary heroism. Little study of the nation's early history is needed to show that in violence, and malign ity of personal attacks, in bitter ness of personal rivalries and animosities, the early days were not as stainless and beautiful as many imagine. Not manv Ameri cans have ever been reviled as Washington or Jefferson was, and the latest days, so often called de generate, have not seen a Hamil ton slain in a duel by a Burr. To-day there is seen a pride in the national unity, power, and pro gress, and a measure of subordina tion of loc?l to national interests, which nowhere appear in the years immediately succeeding the revol ution. Nothing but stern necessity brought the colonies together into a political union, but the national spirit, then so weak, has grown to be powerful enough to suppress the greatest civil war of human history In a hizher sense the nation grown, because it has cleared away the weak and dishonoring com promises of its origin. Slavery has gone, and with it the pernicious .ataViiiah si nroteutorate over the J little republic of Hayti. The French minister at Washington, Thindnrf Roustan. has been maneuvering in a manner sug gestive of war preparations. The Samoan troubie having now been satisfactorily settled with, the Ger mans, the United States will have leisure to attend to the French should they become bel.icose over the Haytian affair. The Santiam mines are receiving more attention at the hands of capitalists and miners now than T . 1 1 f I ever Detore. u nas own iwuuu that valuable ledges of gold and silver exist there, and a mining district has been formed there which promises to give an impetus to the country adjacent to these mines not excelled by that of the Coeurd'Alene district. It is not improbable that in the near future smelting works will be required in this city, and an immense volume of business result from the Santiam mines. 91AKKIEU. Any information leading to his recovery will be suitably rewarded. - springs up in almost every state at once. Through concurrent action of state legislatures, enormous pro gress has already been made, and yet it is everywhere felt that the failure to secure for all citizens the benefits of that legislation which has been found the wisest and best is a discredit, which patriotic feel ing strives earnestly to remove. The habit of the time is to speak of our election, law-making bodies, and public men as exceedingly corrupt. Yet it may fairly be "doubted whether tueie was not as much evil in early times, when . . , . i feci iimK aim biakcii mui there was no Argus-eyed scrutiny 4 Algo r the buidmg of a or ceaseless criticism as tnere is h'"d dy cr . at the pc now. The very frequency of con sure betokens a watchfulness and a popular demand for purity of conduct which certainly did not exist m the days of Jackson or Van Buren, or in those of Tierce or Buchanan. Great combinations of capitalists have not more, but less, power than relatively similar combinations had in the times which are now called pure, and it may be doubted whether the righxs of the poorest citizens were ever more jealously watched or impar tially defended than they are now. The progress of the nation in moral life may be traced in the very topics of discussion which have en grossed attention. In early days the rights of states, the creation of banks, the acquisition of territoiy divided men into hoslile carols. Now temperance, purification of elections and of the public service i engross attention. The nation is not only olJer, more manly, less aggressive, but it is more anxious todefend and uplift its citizens, more zealous to proteinics, home and purify its public life, than at any previous period in the centrry Sot Ire to Contractor.
