ConcarniaK the Flans of t'aa C.ezoa Fa ific and the Chicago & Northwestern. A well posted railroad man of this city who has been watching carefully the progress and circum stances surrounding ttie building of the Oregon Pacific railroad east ward from this city, expressed to a Herald reporter recently his views concerning the plans of the road, which are to sav the least plausi ble. The Chicago & Northwestern he thinks is without doubt interested in and aiding the construction of tbe road. This compauy now, he says be has good reason to believe, has a bid in of $1,000,000 for the pricbase of the narrow gauge system. It is a part of the plan of the road to improve this road, perhaps widen it to the standard gaage, build a branch from Astoria to connect with the road at some point in Polk county, thence to Albany, to connect with the Ore gon Pacific, the Southern Pacific, the Lebamm htanch and another branch of the Narrow Gauge to he built from the Co'ourg line to Alba) v. he oe'ay in construction on this ead of the l:ne, he thinks is due to tbe fact that the Coicago & North western company is now using all avai'ab'e surplus hinds to purchase the eastern e id ot the line west to Boise City. As soon as this is conip'eteu there will be no time lost n pushing the Oregon Pacitis eafi-ward to connect with it at Boise City. Ttie Oregon Pacific will be e cterded this simmer, he thinks, to tap the groat wool, grain and stock raising regions of East ern Oiegon, and at no distant day the cars of the Chicago !t North western and those of the Oregon Pacific will be running on a through Eastern line to Albany, thence to the sea ports ot Yaquina and Astoria. COAST K0rE3. The Corvallis court house will b finished in about a month. A disastrous wind-storm atTa-! coma Monday wrecked Bates' new hotel building and killed four men. The farmers complain that the rains are making the fall grain too rank. It is feared that if the fall is wet, a great deal of the fall grain will tumbie. Work on the Coryalb's revetment has been interrupted by the rise in the river, which has prevented the workmen from putting in the fool ing. But for the rise, the revet ment would have been finished by this time. Tbe new Calitoiaia theater was pened Monday evening to a packed and fashionable house. The play was "Othello," with Ed win Booth as Jago. The appear ance of Booth and Barrett was the signal for a burst of applause. Peter Jackson, the colored pugi list, wil'. -eturn to San Francisco en Wednesday from Nevada and Thursday w 11 start fo Portland on h;s way East and to Europe. At Spokane Falls Jackson will meet Terry Flowers, a colored heavy weight, who is well considered by local fancy. The county court of Polk countv has at length finished the examina tion of the petition and the remon strance for and against the buMd ing of a court houe and find that there are 000 names on the remon strance and only 910 on the petition. It was jopoed by the petitioners to show that there tiere enough others who were not on either paper or who had changed their minds to over-balance the remonstrance, but the court de cided to consider only the papers first filed. So Polk county is not to have a court house, for the pre sent, at least. A Brave Engineer. The McMinnville Reporter of the 10th gives the following graphic account of heroism on the West Side train near McMinnville: As last Friday evening's north bound train was approaching this city the engineer noticed an old lady start ing to cress the track at one end of the crosswalks. He blew the whistle sharply and the lady paid no attention. By this time the tram was thundering abng and the old lady just about to step between the rails. The engineer seeing that it would be impossible to stop the engine in time to save her, rapidly crawled to the front, got down on the cowcatcher and aa the immense engine seemed to strike I the ladv he grabbed her by the arm and flung her to one side, sav ing her from a horrible death. On the train stopping the old lady was picked ud and provd to be Mrs. Spring. ' With the exception of a little lameness she was all right. Tbe engineer deserves great praise for his heroic conduct and should receive a substantial douceur from the Southern Pacific company. Looking for a Location. Mr. II. C. Hubbard, of Hum boldt, Iowa, has arrived in the city with his family and is looking for a location. He is a practical druggist, and expects to invest in property in this city and go into business if a suitable opportunity can be obtained. Te S.reel Kailwny. The giading on tbe lirst three blocks and a half of the street rail way has been competed, and the work of laving the ra;ls was bes.m yesterday, tbo tirst spike d'ivingiand largely attended being ceicnrateu m a steady down pour ot ram. Tue ties and j il a lik ing has been distributed along Lyon street, and the work is pro gressing rapidly. T T-e Work. Another lot of maciimey ar rived in this cily yesterday for the ice works. Silea Will Celebrate tbe C.iai'ng Foo-th- Kotaiy AppiIin iU The IlKrALO' Spt-c;al Dispatch's. Salem, May 14. E. C. Hadden. i of Astoria, and II.. B. Curry, ot Portland, were appointed notaries public to-day. A numerously signed ( petition was pi esented to Mayor . Williams to-day asking him to call a mass meeting for Thursday evening to take initiatory steps to prepare for a fourth of July celebiation. The meeting was called accordingly, and the business men are enthusi astic in their determination to make it a success. The advertising committee of the board of trade have secured contri outions amounting to $3126 to be u ed during the year in advertising Salem and Marion county, ihey exject to raise a good deal more in a few days. Cotton King. The Chicago Ccmedy Company presented this thrilling play at the opera house last evening to a de lighted audience. The play was pronounced even better than that o! the opening evening. Mr. James A. Devlin,- as Toby Twindle, brought down the house. Miss Belle Inmah as Martha Gibbs, and Miss Virginia now, as Lady Val eria, were both charming in their role, while Annie E. Inmau, as Fatherbridge, and Coarles E. Patterson, as Jasper Plum, sus tained the-'" characters admirably. tepiien Plum, bis son, showed some e'ever acting. Indeed the en tire company is strictly lirsl-class and the appreciation of the large audience was shown by the con tinuous and hearty applause. The play was concluded with the laughable farce, "Is Marriage a Failure?" To-night will be pre sented the excellent play, "The Lancashire Lass," in which the comedian, Mr. Devlin, will appear in one of his best parts. It will doubtless he attended by a large ajdience.
