gentlemen were arrested early yes
terday morning at Field club and
arraigned to-day at the Vine Btreet
police court to answer to the charge
of gambling. The court was crowd
ed almost to suffcation with people
anxious to see the noblemen ar
raigned as criminals. Earl Dudley
appeared heartily ashamed of him
self and was eager to escape the
notice of the throng by submitting
quietly to tne fane, bat Lord Lar
gan was defiant and angry at his
arrest. The police officers who
made the raid of the club admitted
that that nobleman was not a mem
ber of the Field club, but declared
that he resorted to the various
clubs for the purpose of gambling
The prisoners, twenty-one in num
ber, were remanded for a week on
bail.

as it might be called, is lucatad
just above tho eyt,on the lorehend,
and every outline ot the balloon is
boldly portrayed in purpio lines in
the skin of the infait; even the
patch on the air snip can be seen,
being reproduced by a patch of
white skin. The photograph, as
already stated, is perfect, and cer
tainly entitles the little ,1'ellow to
some of the gate receipts.
Mr. Howard and wife came here
with the Mevcan Theatrical Com
pany, and are well knowa to tne
profession.

How He Secured a Brido When a
Younj Lieutenant.
Tbo first uiarriagc of Jefferson
Davis was of somewhat romantic
character. . After graduating at
West Point he was ordered to Fort
CVawford. at Prairie du Chien,
Wisconsin, he post then com

lor. The daughter ol the latter,
Miss Sallie Knox Taylor, at once
fell desperately in love with the
handsome and intellectual young
Lieutenant, and the uflrsiioti was
reciprocated, but the old (Joltael
was averse to any match-making
under the circumstances and per

capacity . The' lovers managed to
see each other by stratagem, how
ever, and one morning at daylight
they were missing. The household
was instantly aroused, the servants
ntcrrogited and a search made,
but nothing was elicited save that

four horses were gone, and their
tracks indicated a hasty departure.
Further examination of the
premises showed that Lieutenant
George Wilson, brother of Thomas
S. Wilson of Dubuque, la., and
Miss Street, daughter ef Genera!
Street, had likewise suddeady dis
appeared. There was but one con
clusion, and in less than an hour
every man, woman and child in
the village knew all about the run
away match.
Colonel Taylor was enraged and
declared with an oath as stroag as
ever he used that under no circum
stances would he forgive Davis or
become reconciled to Lis daughter s
disobediaace. Sixteei years passed.
'Old Zach" was in command of
tCe United States Army in Mexico,
and serving under him was Colonel
Jefferson Davis at the head of the
famous First Mississippi Rifles.
At the battle of Cuena Vista this
regiment covered itself with glory,
but Davis, while leading one of its
charges at a critical moment, felt
seveie!y and, it was supposed,
mortally wounded. He was borne
from the Celd and that evening
Genrra! Taylor, mounted on Old
Whitney, paid him a visit. Dis
mounting, he stepped into the
Colonel's cot and cxtendsd his
band.
