If there is any good reason why i the podtofhee could not, alonj; witii the other improvements of the city, be conducted on a more metro politan scale.the people of Albany, especially the boxholders, would like to know it. It is expected by Uncle Sam that businesr men and the public generally, as far as prac ticable, should rent poatollice boxes, yet no .convenience what ever ia gained by paying rent for a box, as the outer doors, close imultaneously with the postoflice window. In every other place of importance the interior of the post oftice is so arranged that the out Bide doors can be loft open, so that the holders of boxes can have ac cess to the same and get their mail at any time. This could be easily done here with a .small expense, and there would be some induce ment for the public to rent boxes. It is very unsatisfactory for a man who has a business engage- went, or wants to attend an even- intr lecture or a. concert, to be coin- - nelled to break awav in time to reach the postonice before "J o'clock sharp, or suffer the penalty of waiting until tho next day for his mail, especially when he pays reg ularly for a box, which is supposed to he attended with some conven iences. This is one annoyance at which a long suffering public is now misi.'.g a vigorous "kick," and it is but a reasonable demand that a little carpenter work be done on the interior of the post office building, the partition be tween the waiting room and the sanctuary behind the pigeon holes be extended to the ceiling, or in some other manner made as burg lar proof as may be desired, and the outer doors left open, giving boxholders the convenience for which they pay by being allowed access to the same at any time. These remarks are respectfully referred to Postmaster General Wannamaker, or any of his sub ordinates down to the Albany post master, who may have power and authority to make the desired change. FURTHER PARTICULARS Of the Sfceotiog of F. H. 0la at Sabm H!s Death. Salem, May 2. This morning on examination of the wound of F. II. Ogle, who was shot last night by W. E. Hawkins, the physicians at once said he could not recover. The examination revealed the fact that a ballet had struck and broken the collar bone and penetrated the left breast. The weapon used was a 38 calibre Smith & Wesson. The wound was not probed to the bul let, as the patient was spitting so much blood. Hope of his recovery was not entertained for a moment, and he was removed to he home of Mrs. T. II. Cox on Front street. His wife, who was here with him. ' is a niece of Dr. Horace W. Cox. and is prostrated over the great trouble. The wounded man never regained consciousness, and breathed his last at 12 m. to-day. The deceased, whose full name was Franklin Harvey Ogle, was born October 22, 1858, at Paloma, Adams county, Illinois, and came to Oregon with his parents when he was l.'J years old and has re- ! sided here since His uresent home is about four miles northeast of Lebanon, Linn county, where he owns a farm. There is probably no building m the city in which so many, success ful business men iiave taken their start'' as the one now being moved Jown Second street, and which w:ll leach its final resting place to-morrow, weather permitting. It is one of the olilest business hou-es in Albany, haying been built in 185:2, by Wright ci Lincoln for John Con ner. It was tirst occupied by Con ner & Wakefield, dealers in gener al merchandise. Mr. Wakefield is now a wealthy man, with his home in Oakland, Cal. D. W. Wakefield, of the firm of Atkinson & Wuktield, real estate agents, at Portland, was their clerk. At this early date, buildings being scarce, Wells, r argo & Co. had their office in this store, which at night was conduct ed by Win. Gray. At that time an immense amount of money was shipped by this company, Albany being the distributing point for ail of the Willamette Valley. Upon a certain trip a package containing $ I Dili) in gold dust was lost. A vig ilant search was made but no trace of the missing package sould be found, so it was given up for lost and the money repaid by the com pany. A year afterwards, in tak ing an invoice of their goods, Mr. Conner found the package and re turned it to the company. Being carelessly wrapped in brown paper it had been cast aside and laid in the rubbish for old hardware. But we have deviated troui our subject to relate an incident oi early days, and will return to the old building. Mr. Conner pur chased of Mr. Wakefield his inter est in the business, and employing L. E. Blain as clerk, conducted it alone for a number of years. The building was next occupied by Mr. Kighthnger, now of Salem, as a grocery store, and Al. Cross man, now a very successful gents furnishing clothier in Portland.was has his clerk. He sold his busi ness to Mr. Hiltebidel. who em ployed F. M. Redfield as clerk. The building was then sold to B. W. Cundifi, who rented it to Mr. J. Joseph, of this city, for a cigar and tobacco house, after which Mr. Mr. O'Conner occupied it as an auction store. Haying now served its time of usefulness fcr white men, more and better houses hav ing been built, it was rented to San Wa, who in a few years saved enough money to take a trip to China. It was next rented to Jim West: fall, who is now one of the wealth iest railroad contractors in the state, and who is having il moved to its new location in Chinatown, where it will shelter at night a thousand Chinamen if necessary. The upstairs was i at one time prepared for offices and many early business men had their offi ces there, among whom may be mentioned Dr. Tate and Dr. Mil ler, both practicing physicians, and Dr. Grillin, a dentist. It cer tainly seems that the presiding genius within the building muet have been a mascotte, for more money has changed hands within its charred walls than in any other in the city, and every man, almost without . exception, who occupied it as pi oprietor and clerk, after wards prospered - and became wealthy and popular businessmen, as a glance over its history will show. Upon its bight will be built the finest Masonic temple in Oregon, of which the order will feel proud, and will be an ornament to that portion of the city. COAST NOTES. Oregon has between 100,000 and 105,000 school children. Five counties in Washington Territory have female county superintendents of schools. Umatilla county is without a jail and prisoners are allowed to roam at will so long as they report at the sheriffs office every fifteen minutes. It is claimed that Southern Ore gon has a Chinaman that stands seven feet four, in his stocking feet ; that he is 53 years of age and Ly Fung Su by name. The Canadian government pro poses to subsidize a steamship line between British Columbia and Australia. The subsidy amounts to $125,000. The editor of the Home Press, of Centerville, Umatilla county, has had a guardian appointed. He has been sued for libel and being under age this was necessary. California and the Columbia rivei region will this year probably produce an immense wheat crop, aggregating at least 100,000,000 bushels, and one-third as much barley and oats. The railroad men say there are between 2000 and 3000 tramps of the most desperate order along the line of railroad between Ogden and Reno. Of this number, one town is credited with 150. In proportion to its population Portland leads the world for its number of Odd Fellows. One out of every four of the citizens over twenty-one belongs to the order. The seven lodges of the city have a fund of $149,015 74. The Unity is the richest lodge, with $34,430 in the treasurj When it was stateu a few days ago that two car loads of cats had been shipped from Iowa to Dakota by an enterprising speculator, and that ho was negotiating for another car load, the item presented the appearance of a huge joke ; but it seems that it was in real earnest and that the cats are needed there to kill the mice which swarm in the corn and wheat bins and do great damage. The market rates lor cats in Iowa is from 50 cents to $1, while quotations in Dakota range from $2 50 to $3 so the cat merchant has a handscme margin. The l),-n:i:niti. Im'rr whin is eH sk'.n linep.
