Toe question of steam whistles and o.her discordant noises, iu cities and elsewhere, and theit effects upon nervous maladies pre valent amonx human bein, is one that has been the subject of con siderable discussion, and is one of i cut ing for higher prices would in evitably come out wealthy. And what are now the results? The magnificent rains which the North west is now experiencing have been the last ounce on the camel's back, some parties have lost millions during the last three months ; ex ports of gram have been most seriously checked: the masses have- been compelled to buy dear bread, and the country will be left with a large surplus to sell at a loss and to drag down the prices of the coming crop. It is said that the work on the Panama canal has had the result of changing the climate in that deadlv land of heat and malaiia. The tall trees on the heights of Cilebra formerly 6hut off all wind from the Panama side of the isth mus. Aow tnese trees are all cut down and sixty feet of the moun tain top has been sliced off. Hence tbe northeast trade winds of the Atlantic sweep across through this cut and do much to mitigate the heat of Panama. With the canal down to the original plan 1889 88 1889 SPRING AND SUMMER 1 889 SPECIALTIES. impoitance. An eminent medical authority says : The most sensi tive, delicate and easily injured parts of the human system are the nerves. These never can become so accustomed to incessant strain s to escape injury. That which is unpleasant to the senses is always and, so far as the senses of hearing is concerned, discordant noisss always are injurious to the ilerves. The yelling of steam whistles, tiie hiss of steam pipes, the rattle and clash of wheels on stone covered streets, the rumble of street cars, the clangor of bells, the howling of hucksters, keep up a condition in which a healthy j nervous system oi natural sirengtn and sensitiveness is impossible. And there is not one of those agencies that is not suppressed more or less completely in most of the great cities of the world. In Kerlin heayy wagons are not allowed on certain streets. In Paris any car load of rattling ma terial must be fastened until it cannot rattle. Munich allows no bells on street cars. In Phila delphia, church bells have been heltf a nuisance ir certain neigh borhoods by judicial ruling. Steam whistles are forbidden in nearly all the larger cities of this country, and most of these noises in our advanced stage of civilization are utterly unnecessary. Clocks and waichas ai now so cheap and plentiful that steam whistles and bells to denote the time arc use less. Why should not all useless noises, and nearly all are useless, be suppressed? The suggestion above would obviate this defect. his recovery will be suitably rewarded. JAPENESE The stories of the extravagant spending of money on the Panama canal construction, are many and varied. It is related that the general superintendent at Panama spent $300,000 on a fine house and J nearly as much in opening up fine roads so that his wife might take horseback rides. She died in about two years, and to signalize his grief over her loss he had all the thoroughbred horses shot which she had used in riding and driving. This imitation of the great Alexander, didn't coBt the mourner anything however, as the horses all belonged to the company and their loss was charged to the inexerable climate. SrEci'LATOKS have, f-r the last few months, more boldly that at any former period in the history of the grain trade of the country, sought to persuade peop'e that a scarcity of wheat was inevitable ; that the government statistics were unreliable; and that those who operated with such news as their guides to their objective points the amassing of fortunes by holdj REMOVAL JOHNSON & DANN'ALS hare removed their blacksmith shop rom their old qaartera to ths corner oppo ite Adj.
