The amount of freight handled in the depot9 in this city shows t hat Albany is the railroad center of the valley, and that the freight ing business over the railroads is immense. Wheeler arrived in this city yesterday from Rock Creek, Linn county. He gives very en couraging reports of the develop ment being made in the silver mines in that section. He says that the Clarren Bros., of the re duction works at Portland, are pushing the work in the Galena tunnel, having now reached 275 feet, and are now running three shifts, and that they are also at work on the Brightenbush mine, in Marion county. He also states that the Canal Fork Mining com pany, of Portland, will soon resume work in the Canal Fork mine, in the White Bull district, in which they have already invested about $50,000. Mr. Wheeler says there are a number of undeveloped leads in that vicinity, which have shown indications of richness, and will no doubt be found, in the near future, to be of great value. Salem States man. Improvements iieueral. The Oregonian, noting the amount of improving going on in this valley, says: There is no de nying that a great improvement in feeling has taken place through the Willamette valley, and all property is held for better prices. At the state capital property is selling for double what it would have brought two years ago; but two or three years ago Salem property would not have sold for over one-half what it was actually wortn or what it would cost to buy the lots and improve them. Prices now are not fully up to original cost, ex cept in favored localities. It sounds queer to talk of a "boom" in real estate when it only brings first cost, but that would be good prices in all our Oregon towns. Reform Sehl. The question is leing asked does reform schools prove a success? And the answer is given that in California it has proven an entire .'ailure. It is generally supposed that John Priest will be allowed to serve out his term as collector of the port of Yaquina. He has about a year yet to serve. Dr. Bayley talks of building a permanent wharf with stone bulk head and piers, on his water front opposite his stable. The new hoisting derrick for the government wharf is completed and will be placed into position to morrow. It is a first-class one. The sea the past few days has carried away the main deck of the wiecked Yaquina Bay as far back as the engine room. The hull will soon be a total wreck. Business is as quiet as the mos. fossilized moss-back could desire. The teachers' institute this week was a great success. Old fogies and old fogyism had to take a back seat. More good was done than at any previous institute here. This morning about 8 a. m. a man was found lying on the rail road track about live miles north of Cresswell literally torn to pieces. There was nothing to identify him but a memorandum book, and neither his name or home could be In and. He must have been killed i i...
