They are now in a position to buy and sell all kinds of staple and fancy groceries cheaper than any house in the city. Apple fr)in Michigan. There is certainly something out of joint in the season, or crops when Oregon, the land of big re l apples, is compelled to send Etst for apples, but this is just what i being done now. Wallace, Thomp son & Co., of this city, received yesterday a shipment of Baldwin apples all the way from Michigan. They expected to get tomething nice, but they are much inferior to rhe average apples of Oregon. They retail at $6" per barrel, or two for a nickel. During fruit season Oregon apples four times the size can 1 e bought for 25 cents per bushel. If this does not call for more attention to be paid to fruit raising, we give it up. 4 unrord Fame:.'. The city of Newport, on Yaquina bay, some time time tince leased to the United States government, through Captain Young, United States engineer, a portion of the water front of the city, where a wharf and tramway "are being erected, for the use of the engin eers in constructing the north jetty at the mouth of the bay. Recently the foreman on the work has . been summoned to appear before the circuit court of Benton county at the suit of Samuel Case, who wishes to enjoin the construction of the wharf and tramway and to get possession o the water front. The state deeded the water front to the city of Newport, but Mr. Case alleges that the state had no right to do this, and that he is entitled to possession of the proierty. Such cases are usually brought in the United States court, and this will probably get there before it is de cided. It is not probable that Mr. Case wishes to interfere with the improvement of the entrance to Yaquina bay, but if he owns the property in question desires to be paid for it or lor the use of it. Salem aad Anlwria K. B. IletM. The railroad that is considered certain of crossing thecountry from Astoria either to Salem or Albany, or both, in the Wiilniette valley, will traverse a portiou of Columbia county. West Shore. Work has been commenced at Astoria on the As'oria & South Coast railroad, and it is proposed by citizens of Salem to unite with those of McMinnville in bringing the road into the vailcv to Salem 07 the way of McMinnville. When the time comes for action there is up doubt that '.he business men ol the city will take hold of the mat ter with the same energy they have exhibited in other enterprises. West Shore. BiJs for railroad tics were opened at the office of the Astoria & South Corfbt railway company Monday. There was evidently a misunder standing of the specifications on the part of some of the bidders which will delay the letting of the cuntract for a day or two. Astoriau. USEES W0OI' riK akt ti:i. The Benton Leader says that on Tuesday the annual meeting of the . . 1 t i.1 a It - r stocknoiaers 01 me viegon racinc railroad company and of the Wil lamette Valley and Coast Railroad company were held at Corvallis. Fully nineteen-twentieth of the stock in both companies was present or represented. Unani mous votes of approval and confi dence in the directors and officers of the companies were passed am; the retiring officers were all re elected. The stockholders who were not personally present, both u the East and abroad, sent their oroxies to Col. T. E. Hogg, presi dent of the road, and they were voted by Mr. William M. Hoag as his substitute, and the Leader adds : This fact amply refutes the statements that have from time to time been made in tne newspapers tlu I ha nrnapnt mftnaffftmpnt S'.ia unsatisfactory 01 that the road was about to be run unuer another management. It is safe to say 'iat the road in which all our peo i e have such a vital interest, will be continued to a successful ter mination under the management that has developed the enterprise from nothing to its present stand ing among the railroads of the country. In this connection, we are informed that the current debts of the company inclrding all not adjusted, are now being paid off up to the first of March ult., and that Mr. C. C. The fact that all the debts of the company which are adjusted are being paid off, is proof that the other obligations which are still unsettled would be paid as well, if there were not dif ferences about them. The road will be built to Boise City by the people who are now building it, and there will be no change of management. Notice.
