orders have been 6ent to the United
States steamship Thetis at the
Mare Island nary yard to proceed
to Sitka, touching at such places as
the commanding officer may deem
necessary. When she arrives at
Sitka and communicates with the
civil authorities she will, if the
situation is quiet and her presence
there is not required, continue
on northward and devote her at
tention particularly to tne whaling
fleet and other commercial inter
ests of the United States in the
waters about the Behring straits
and the Arctic ocean. As the
whaling vessels usually leave the
Arctic sea in the latter part of Sep
tember the presence of the Thetis
until then will add security to those
engaged in that important industry
and the Thetis will remain until
they have taken their departure
southward, taking care not to be
caught in the ice. She will then
return to Sitka and await further
instructions.

average weight of wheat by states :

Gray, of Massachusetts, the vet
eran bachelor of the supreme court
oi the United States, is to join the
army of benedicts. He has con
fided to an associate justice of the
court his engagement to Miss
Jeanette, daughter of Associate
Justice Stanly Matthews, of Ohio.
Mis" Matthews is nearing 30 yeais
of age, while Justice Gray, who if
a very tall, finely formed and well
preserved man, is probably C2
years of age. The justice did not
impart to his associates the date of
his intended marriage.

Despite the fanciful pictures
which some writers have drawn of
the ocean bed, its de-oiation, at
least in its deepest parts, must be
extreme. Beyond the first nvle it
is a vast desert of slime and ooze,
upen which is constantly dripping
a rain of dead carcasses from the
surface, which carcasses supply the
nourishment for the scanty fauna
inhabiting the abyssal region in
some places mote than five miles
from the sunshine and the mi
croscope reveals that the slimy
matter covering this deepest ocean
bed is very similar in composition
to the ancient chalk of the cetace
ous period, while mixed with it
here and there are minute metallic
aad magnetic bodies which have
been proved to be dust from
meteorites. At long distances a
phosphorescent light gleams from
the head of some pasiing fish which
has strayed thither from a higher
and happier zone. But it is not
until we have mounted a good deal
nearer the surface that the scene
c'tanges for the b rtier. We now
meet with forests ot brilliantly
colored sponges, while the phos
phorescent animals swimming
about are much more cuiuerou.
and the nearer we gtt to the littoral
zone more and more phosphorescent
lights appear, til! at length the
srene becomes truly animated.
When ouly 1,200 feet separate us
trout the sunsluue we come upou
tne first seaweed and kelp (1,200
feet is the deepest limit of plant
life in water), but we must rise
(iii another 1.000 feet and more,
and get as near the top as 130 feet
before we fiad any reef-building
corals. As plants do net live in
deep sea, the deep-sea airimals
either prey on one another or get
their food from dead oran'Miis
and plants which sink no an to the
bottcin. Thus Maury says: ''The
sea. like the snow cloud with it?

experiment
proves that a tiny shell would take
about a week to fall from the sur
face to the deepest depths. Since
sunlight does not penetrate much
farther tban the littoral zone there
would be beyond this perpetual
darkness but for phosphorescence.
Many of tbe animals inhabiting
the continental and abyssal zones
have merely rudimentary eyes; but
these blind creatures have very long
feelers, which help them to group
their way along the bottom. Other
deep sea animals, on the contrary,
have enormous eyes, and these very
likely congregate around such of
tbeir number as are phosphorescent,
and may perhaps follow the mov
ing lam posts about wherever tney '
may go. And so bright is this
light on many of the fish brought
up by the dredge that during the!
Drier space tne animals survive it is
not difficult to read by it. The
reason why fishes and mollnsks
living more than three mllles under
water are able to bear a pressure of
several tons is tht they have ex
ceedingly loose tissues, which
allow the water to flaw through
every interstice and thus to equalize
tbe weight. When tbe pressure is
removed tbey perish. In tbe

sharks brought up from a depth of
a little less tban three-quarters of a
mile were dead when tbey rot to
tbe surface of tbe sen:

-ct by keeping up a belt of skin
action, and so acting as a counter

The Eugene Register says of the
Albany Woolen Mill proposition:
Our sister city, of Albany, is re
joicing at tbe prospect of having
the woolen mills located at Browns
ville removed to Albany, and en
larged to the capacity of manufac
turing 350,000 pounds of wooll per
an nam. At a public meeting of the
citizens the proposition made by
the owners of the plant was accept
ed, and one half tbe amount requir
ed as a bonus was raised, and there
'i no doubt but tbe remainder can
be eaily raised. The business men
of Albany are wis in offering finan
cial encouragement e every indus
try that iucreases the capital and
, roductive power of the town. The
most unfortunate situation a town
Ciiu be placed in, is to be put under
tbe shadow of a boom that baa
nothing to sustain it hut the vision
ary prophesies of those who are in
terested in booming rea! estate in
all directions. Legitimate buyers
are deterred from investing; manu
factures go elsewhere, and the
boomers are ultimately left with
nothing but collapsed schemes ou
their hands.
