With solemn ceremony, in the preeence of all the power and authority em bodied in the co-ordinate branches of the government, and surrounded by representations of all the great nations on the face of the globe, Benjamin Harrison was to day inaugurated into the highest office within the gift of the Ameri can people. Never was such a crowd in Washington before. It is estimated that half a million strangers camped in the city last night, filling every inch of ppace and boarding house accommodation and drawing to the full limit on private hospitality. General Harrison, accompanied by the inauguration committee, PRESIDENT HARRISON. w.is taken in a clot-e carriage, drawn by four gray hoi; to he White House about half-past 10 o'clock. Mrs. Cleveland w itiensed their departure from the window. AT THE CAPITOL. At 11 :35 the head of the proces sion reached the capitol, and at 11:50 the presidential party alighted at the senate portico amid great cheering, though the rain was pouring its heaviest. Cleve land proceeded to the president's room and Harrison and Morton to the vice-president's room, whence at noon, as already described, they went into the senate chamber, pre paratory to the inaugural address. TAKING THE OAT.I OF OFFICE. At two minutes before imon Mr. Cleveland and his cabinet entered and took seafs assigned them. Then Harrison on the arm of Sen ator Hoar appeared at the door and walked to a seat at Cleveland's right, the audience rising. The same ceremony was repeated with Morton. Before taking his seat the latter was sworn in by Ingalls. At 11 :59 president pro tem In galls rose and closed the fiftieth congress, men vice rresiaem Morton called the senate of the fifty-first congress to order in spe cial session. president hadbison's inaugubal ADDRESS. After light'refreshments occupying but a few minute, to which no guests were invited, Mr. Cleveland took his leave of President Harrison and drove to the residence of Sec retary Fairchild, and President Harrison proceeded to the review ing stand in front of the White Horse and reviewed the inaugural procession, which was the grandest pageant ever witnessed in the na tional capital. Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland were not present at the inaugura' ball. Thev will go to New York Tuesday or Wednesday. THE CABINET. The cabinet has not been offi daily announced at this hour, but it is reasonably certain that the following-named men will be Presi dent Harrison's advisors : Secretary of state James G Blaine, of Maine. Secretary of the treasury Wil liam Wmdom, of Minnesota. Secretary of war Redfield Proc tor, of Vermont. Kecretaiy of the navy Benjamin F. Tracy, of New York. Secretary of the interior John W. Noble, of Missouri. Postmaster-General John Wan namaker, of Pennsylvania. Attorney-general W. H. H. Miller, of Indiana. Secretary of agriculture Jere miah Rusk, of Wisconsin. NtTES AND COMMENTS. The first American flag ever used was carried in the procession. The chair in which Washington sat when be was inaugurated on the fteps of the old custom house in New York was placed upon the platform for the use of General Harrison during the ceremonies. It is a venerable but staunch piece of .'ui niture. It has been customary ior the clerk of the mjreine court to pro vide a bible for the president-elect to take the oath upon, but General Harrison brought with him from: home an old bible that he has used for many years ai.d carried all through the war in his saddle bags. He preferred to u.-e this and Mc Kenney, clerk of the court, had it so arranged. MORALITY IN ALihlaA. Hisnianarirs Criticised bj Cioverstar Swinefard. Yahhinoton, March 4. In the bliiul asvlum at Steglitz, a short distance from Berlin, there lives a man wl o until recently was as mysterious a peiaonage as the famous "Man of the Iron Mask," Certain persons high iu aut hority made ap plication for apartments at the asylum which should tie worthy of a wealthy occupant. He appeared a short lime atter, accompanied by a beautiful women, who was addressed as his wife. The man was 'all and well made, and dressed in the height of fashion, with hands that betokened gentility of birth. The woman waa young and aristocratic in looks and bearing. About the face of the man waa a linen mask, with an opening opposite the mouth and nostrils, which was nev r removed in the presence of attendants.
