The present condition and strength of the present royal family of England, and its future stand ing in the political arena in that country is a question of interest to Americans, as it involves to a cer-1 lain degree the spread of our re-1 publican form of government. It is an obvious fact at present that the power of the British sovereign is no more in extent than is the power of our own executive at present. The prestige of the name of monarch and the claim of heredity that is still acknowledged is really all of the sovereignty that attaches to the crown of Eng land. The Pittsburg Dispatch expresses something of the Eng lish estimation of its royalty in discussing the ancient artillery company. It says that the storm that has been raised in England o.'er the action of the Queen and l'rince of Wales in dissolving the honorable artillery company, of London, indicates the strength which ancient and useless privil ' eges still have in that country. The honorable company had not done any military service for some centuries; and its only righting was the periodical combat with the bottle, in which the victors were th? viands and beverages which the perquisites of the company furnished. The Prince of Wales, being ex-ofticio the commanding officer ol this organization, thought that the use of public funds on the presumption that it was a milita-y company ought to imply that it should be put in shape so that it could do some fighting if railed i upon. He proposed to have the members trained in some other assaults than those on the banquet ing-table, and enabled to make a stronger defense than they gener ally do againt-t the bottle. But his reformatoty measures were so steadily opposed by the other officers as to be defeated, with the i consequence that the Queen, prob- i ably bv the Prince's advice, took j awav its warrant and brought that ! relic" of antique useles.si.e.s and prescriptive privilege to a death of old a"e. The storm that this has raised has been unique. The idea that an old organism should be done to death because it does not fiultill what it was intended to dolt,,e rul3r's recovery, besides prt- is regarded as subversive, danger-! ous and tyrannical. If the royal reformers will pause and think a moment they may see that their I doctrine is revolutionary, li '. offices, privilege., and jiowers are to be aloli-iu'd liecause they have lieen rethlced bv time to the rank ., , , . Ot Costly and Useless puppetry, what n ill be done with the British monarchy ? EMIILU I'M EX T OF tio YS. j On the subject of the employ ment of boys, . which has been so , . Selfishness and shortsightness could not exhibit itself more offensively than in op position by labor associations to i t!ie trade school, for the establisl - m At of proposes which Mr. Williamson to donate his immense fortune. The discussion in the Local Assembly 1740 shows there is a division of opinion on the sub- j ject of a "trade school. The lead ing spirits among the knights, so far as they have expressed them selves are veiy far from objecting to Mr. Williamson's form of be nevolence. We are confident that on reflection even those now ob jecting will see that the boys have rights, as well as they, and that I they would be quite as much justi fied in objecting to the boys hav ing bread to eat as in objecting to their being taught how to earn that bread. THE TRUSTS. One of the most outspoken and earnest articles ujion the subject of "trusts" appears in the editorial columns of that excellent paper the Prairie Farmer, of Chicago. It says that "the modern trust is a hydra-headed monster. Its pro vince is to wreck railroads.com bine to place a fictitious price iqon any article of value, to crowd out com petitors by driving all but those engaged in the conspiracy out of the trade, and then fix prices to suit the greed of the principals. The trust is, in fact, aconspiiacy to illegally and outrageously tax every purchaser of the goods or commodities it represents. With ! ever they may call themselves, whether the commodity be coal, iron, salt, sugar, or what not, the aim is to put fictitious and out rageous profits into the gaping and capacious pockets of the unrupu lous organizers. The minions of trusts, syndica tes and pools, and even some of the principals themselves, are found in the senate and house of representatives of the United States and also in state legislatures. Are such jteople safe to trufct? Being interested, are they tit law makers? Is not the creative power greater than the created? Most assuredly! Why then this twad- die that the law cannot touch them? They are conspirators, robbers, enemies of the public welfare, and the man or the legis lator who assumes or argues that the law cannot rt-.h them, is no less dangerous a- a law-maker than the hydra-headed trust of to. day."
