Yesterday morning the friends of Mrs. Waytwan S:. Clair were shocked to hear of her death, which occurred at about four o'clock that morning. She bad been ill sereral days with some thinglike neuralgia of the stomach and had suffered very much on the Friday preceding Iter death. . But she was not thought to be seriously ill. On Sunday evening her hus band sat up until midnight, she was restless when he went to bed. He got up again at two and found her sleeping at parently sweetly and did not disturo' her. About six one of his little boys ' waked and wanted something, and after Mr. St. Clair had' attended to his wants, he went toi his wife's bed side and put his hand on her fore head. It was cold and he imme diately knew that she was dead. Still, as her body was yet warm he aroused a neighbor and went for a doctor, who arrived in a few minutes, it being then a few min utes past six. Dr. Farra, who called, thought she had been dead about two hours. The deceased leaves a husband'and two children who have the sympathy ot the whole community in their loss. She was an estimable lady and her sudden death will be felt in the community which she adorned. Her relatives in Portland were wired yesterday morning and were expected to come on the train to Albanv, thence by carriage. The funeral will probably occur to-day. Benton Leader. Thsy Send Men from Sac F tut "so t3 City on a Wild Goose Chase, This Six men, all blacksmiths, who came up irom caii Francisco to ob tain work on the Oregon Pacific railroad at their trade, on the rec ommendation of C. K. Hansen & Co., disreputable employment agents of that city, are at ilia Russ house in this city waiting the sail ing of the Willamette Valley from Yaquiiia to return to San tiancis- co. liiev tuunu. on arriving at iiie i isont, that Messrs. Searle & Deane, to whom they had been sent under promise bv the 'Frisco sharpers ol j o.2o per day, and for which injur I mat ion they were forced to pay .V2 50 each, did not need any black j smiths and had given Hanson & I Co. no orders to send any such men it is neeiless to say the men are very ireful. They say no blame is attached to Messrs. Searles & Deane, or to the railroad company, but they propose on their return to have Hanson & Co. arrested for obtaining money under laise pretenses, and one ot the number declared he would make them disgorge the fees charged or he would break their heads when he returned to tan .Francisco. It is certainly no trivial offense to seni men off to another state to obtain work which is only imagin ary and charge the laborers fees for such crookedness. Hanson tt Co. have been ar rested hereioiore for similar offen ses, and they ought to be given the full extent of the law, if they can be reached by legal proceedings. ori'iiitu I'aciHc Aotcs, The work of construction on the Oregon Pacific is being pushed rap idly forward and everything is be ing done in ' the best possible manner. The track has reached the Fox Valley wagon road, within a mile ami a half of where the road will cross into Marion county at Mills City, which is on the north fork of the Santiam river, eight miles above Mehama. The fine truss bridge at this place is nearly completed and will be readv for the tracklayers when they arrive there about the last of the week. The bridge is located in a fine posi tion, the framework being placed on natural abutments of solid rock on both sides of the river, so that there is no danger of the bridge being washed out by high water. The track is aiready ballasted nearly ail the wayjup to Mehama, the best kind of ballast, a sort of shale, being obtained from the big rock cut at Shiphart's bluff about four miies below Mehama. The grade is about completed to what is now termed Gatesville, on John Gate's place, four miles above Mil.s City. A long side track and a Y will be put in at this place, the latter to be used in turning trains around without using a turn-table. This place will probably be the end of the division operated this win ter. The grade and probably some of the track will be constructed up as far as Breitonbush, fifteen miles aboye Gates' this winter. The mills of the Santiam lumbering company at Mills City have started up and are furnishing all the lum ber needed by the company for bridges and culverts along the line. Construction tiains are run up to the end of the tiack and a passen ger train is now run up to Lyons vilie. The grade is very uniform and the road bed is very smooth, so that the train can make excel lent time without the usual jars ami bumps incident to travel over new track. They Vt ant I tie !. Deputy United States Marshal Roberts, who was dispatched to Omaha a few days since to bring back R. E. Janeway, who robbed the mail at spicer, Linn county, telegraphed back vesterdav tht mat i the marshal at Omaha refused give the prisoner up to him. Later in rhe day be telegraphed that the matter had been decided by the Cnited States court and he was starting home without the prison er. This does not mean that the prisoner is not to be broughi here, but that the marshal at Omaha wants to bring him and secure the fees. Deputy Roberts had permis sion from the United States mar shals of Idaho and Wyoming ter ritories, through which he must pass to bring a prisoner through; and at the Nebraska state line will probably demand the custody of the prisoner. So long as Janeway a-r es here it matters not the gen eral public in whose custody he travels, but it makes some differ ence to the otlicials who coll t the fees and who see the end of their terms looming up in the distance! Oregonian. The A. C. L. S. now numbers 23 active, wide-awake members.. The meetings are well and fully sus tained. Owing to the careful preparation under the supervision of the faculty, tne parts are inter esting and profitable. W. S. Tomlinson was welcomed to full membership last Friday. When the O. & C. gravel train pulled into Oregon City Monday evening the dead ami mangled body of Chas. Knight, a brakeman on the train, was discovered drag ging on the ground underneath one of the cars. He had fallen between the cars after the train had left Canemah, one mile above, but he had not been missed until the train reached Oregon City. An inquest held over bis remains resulted in a eruiet by the jurv cf accidental death. His body was taken to his home at Canby. HOPS FKOI THE VALLEY. The modes of dt.itli s approach are various, and statistics show conclusive ly that more persons die from diseases of the throat and lungs than any other. It is probable that everyone, without exception, receives yast rumbcrs of Tubcicle Germs into the system and where these germs fall upon suitable soil they start into life and develop, at tirst slowly and is shown by a slight tickling sensation in the throat and if allowed to continue their ravages they extend to the lungs pro ducing consumption and to the head, causing catarrh. Now all this is dangerous and if allowed to proceed will in time cause death. Al the onset you must act with promptness; allow ing a cold to go without attention is dangerous and may lose you your life. As soon as you feel that some thing is wrong with your throat, lungs or nostrils, obtain a bottle of Boschec's German Syrup. It wili give you im mediate relief. Caution to Mothers.
