MOKE NEW L ItlSCOVEKIE; Tills Time the Article is Found Up on the ' SaiUiani. New discoveries of coal ate being male from time to time in tbe Northwest, and there seems but iittle doubt about coal being as plentiful in this section as in almost any part of the Union, it is iiuite certain that coal oil and natural gas will be found as there are strong indications in a number of places. A coal mine which, promises to be a very valuable one was disco -ered in July last, on the south t'orK of the north fork of the Santiam, about eight miles above .Sweet Hume and twenty-live miles from Lebanon. The vein which crops out in places in the bed of the creek, is from live to six feet in thickness and is now being opened out. Specimens of the coal have been assayed by J. 11. Fisk, who gives the ii lowing analysis : This is better than the average of Seattle coal, and is a Higher grade than most of the 1'uget i-o.ind coal. There will be less ash 'f. 11e "as been ueyeiopeu, and it there is not too much earth aiter the mine has been developed, and stony substance intermixed, it will be a valuable mine. The coal cokes well, and is good for making gas. One hundred parts of the raw coal gave sixty-two of coke, which was composed as fallows: Caibon, 7S.70; ash, 21.30. Tins includes .71 of sulphur and a trace of phos phorus. Now that so much attention is being turned to prospecting for coal and mines of all kinds, there is greater need than ever of a state g.-ologist, who can investigate dis covories and make reliable and in telligent reports thereon. Every other state has such an otlicer, and Oregon once had one, and a com petent one, too, in the person of Prof. Thomas Condon, now of the University of Oregon, whose e:iual as a scholar and geologist but few states can produce. He was only in office a short time, when a dem ocratic administration cut the sal ary down to that of a clerk, and so Oregon has been w ithout a state geologist for years, it ia high time another was appointed. A l(ur;i;ir'.s .urrun Escape. j A good joke is told on a prom-' inent shoe dealer in this city, who, after being out nearly all night re ceiving the returns of the election, went home just before the dawn of day. It being so near time for breakfast, he concluded he would put the kindling wood in the stove and have everything ready so his wi;e would not need to disturb him until breakfast was ready ; after whic i he retired to dream about how many pairs ot shoes he would win or lose on the result.
