B, Danks read a paper on "Marriage Customs of the New British Group.'" He said that for marriage purposes the people of New Britain are divided into two classes ordivisiops. No man may marry a woman of his own class. To do so would bring instant destruction upon the woman, and if not immediate death upon the man, his life would never be secure. Pre parations for marriage are various. On Duke of York island initiation in to the secret society, which is called the Dnkdok, seems a sutficient pre paration, though not absolutely ne cessary to marriage for the boys, aud there appears to be no ueediul pre paration tor the nirls. On New Zea land some girls wear a fringe across their shoulders until they are mar riageable. These are the poorer classes. Others are put into cages, in which they remain lour or live years with out being allowed to go outside the house in which they are confined. These cages are conical structures, about seven or eight feet iu height. and about ten or twelve feet iu cir- cunil'ereiice at the bottom and for about four teet from the ground, where they taper off to a point at the top. They are made of the broad leaves of the pandauus tree, sewn iuite close together, so that no lig'nt ami very little air can enter, About three feet from the ground tlu e is a stage of bamboos, which forms the floor. There is only room for the girl to sit or lie down in a crouched position o'l tile bamboo platform, and her feet are nevtr allowed to touch (iia ground all the time she is con fined m the cage. Great marriage feasts are provided for these gills when tiiey aie taken 1 out 01 tne cages. ies are pur chased with shell money, and are olteii married ac an eany aj;e on Duke of York island. When a man marries a second wife.after the death of the first, the female relatives of the uead wife gather together and are permitted to do as much damage to Ins property as they can. A man may haye as many wives as he can purchaje; but if he cannot afford to buy one, aud his credit is low, he may have to remain single. Sir John Lubbock said: ' In some parts of Australia, when a man married, each ot the bride's relations gave him a good blow with a stout stick by way of a warm welcome into the family. Among the Kalmucks of Central Asia the marriage ceremony was very romantic. The girl was put on a hcrse and rode at full speed. When she got a fair start the lover set off in pursuit; if he caught her she became his wifv, but if be could not overtake' her the match was broken off, and as we were assured that a Kalmuch girl was very seldom caught against her will. The idea of capture in mar riage occurred almost all over the world. Hence, no doubt, the cus tom of lifting the bride over the doorstep, which occurred among the Romans, the redskins of Canada, the Chinese, the Abyssinians and other taces. W hich Was It? Bacon or Shakespeare The authorship of the dramatic productions contributed to the last of the above named is agitating literary circles to the very centre' but affects the practical masses far less than the momentous question, how to regain or preserve health, that essential of bodily and' mental activity, business success and the"pursuit of happiness" We can throw far moie light on this subject than the most profound gbakesperian can on the question propounded. If the system is de pleted, the nerves shaky; if indiges tion or constipation bothers one at times, or constantly; if the skin is yel low and tongue furred as in billious ness; if there are premonitory twinges of oncoming rheumatism or neurul gia;ifthe kidnevs a.e inactive use Hor-tetter's Stomach Bitters, the finest reoupenmt of an aire prolific in beneficial and successful remedies. One of the old line democrats created quite a sensation, by saying : "1, for one, am 'getting tired of being used as a cat's paw to rake chestnuts out of the tire for North ern politicians. For twenty years or more the people have been using: us to serve their self-interests. The bolid south has been used as a cat's paw by them, and the Solid South have became solidified fools, because they do not kick over the traces. "What would I do? Why, I would do this : I would haye a convention of Southern States. Let a convention meet and discuss the situation. A Chapter on Their Peculiarities and their IsclnlnesK. Tramps are the original human nature Our great forefather was a tramp but had to give up the bus iness because there was no chicken In .uses to rob, no haystacks to sleep behind, and no good heaited farmers wives to give him anything to eat. Vet those must haye been glorious i days for tramuing, for there were no ! tlos, no cutis, no policeman, no nothing that was daugerous. We are uii naturally tramps. A tramp does the hardest kind of work from pure laziness. He is about tee only specimen except Stanley and Emin Buy, and two or three more who live a life of adventure. Governments support these travelers, and they get killed. If the American government, would ship a lot of weil trained tramps to Africa, we will rind out all about the country in no time. Tramps always get through. Kar ring tiie few who get killed by traiii3, tiiey tio not seem to die. Where they go to, heaven only knows, but tne immortality among them is low,, and nothing not even bad whiskey, c.ui kill them. On the c intrary they seem to thrive and grow fat in ratio to the badness of the whiskey. Heaven has to keep their numbers down by dropping them off of freight cars. Tramps are useful, They give policemen exercise and add ztst to country life which is otherwise un excited by anything more interesting than the weather or a mad bull. Vitur.il Product of California.
