by the jury. This sum include?

$800 damages. It is likely that the
suit of G. W. Hunt against the Or

cannot be told with any certainty
how much more than the contract
price it will cost, or a-hat the loss
of the company may be. Mr. Hunt
secured a judgment against the O.
P. Co. in the circuit court in this
city last Friday. If he has his case
tried in the U. S. court he can take
whichever judgment is the largest.

Butteville, is reported as improv
ing. Her attack was light at first.

ceived has brought her through
the cisis and she is now out of
danger. A gentleman who spent
Sunday in Gervais informs this
paper that while there he heard of
several new cases of the disease
that had broken out in and about
Champoeg. One of the victims of
the elread disease is a Chinaman
who belongs to a gang of grubbers
working at Yerger's place two
miles from Champoeg. Another
case reported is that of an old
Frenchman who was taken down
with the disease in its most
malignant form at Menig's place
near Chamoegon Wednesday. The
old gentleman, whose name could
not be learned had been wander- j

ing around the country, and on the
Saturday night before the disease
broke out on him he slept at Hon.
E.J. Harding's place in an out
building where about 20 men, who
were working there with a straw
baler, also lodged. When these
men heard that their lati visitor
had contracted the smallpox they
were all immediately vaccinated,
and but little fear is entertained of
the elisease taking hold of any of

ing states, and also presented this

na bay. It is really surprising to
see the success which has crowned

ernment in developing the entrance
of the harbor at this place. It has
really opened to commerce what is
no.v the fiiie.it harbor on the Pa
cific coast, north of San Francisco.
This is notably true for the city
of Portland is 110 miles from the
ocean, and Tacoma and Seattle, the
ports of shipment of the Northern
Pacific railroad, have to traverse
Puget sound and the straits about
lSo miles before the ship arrives at
the ocean, while it takes only a
few minutes to cross the bar at
Yaquii.a bay, when the ocean is
reached and the ship is at sea. The
breakwater is already constructed,
the deepening of the water at the
bar almost completed, and I am
told that the appropriation made
by congress this year will render
this great harbor safe at nil
seasons, as the water on the bar at
low tide at the present tiui is al
most sufficient for vessels of the
largest size.
Arrangements are now in con
templation for the shipment of
grain direct to Furoje by the Ore
gon Pacific railroad from Yaquina
bay ; and the facilities of this har
bor are so promising that it has al
ready attracted a large intelligent
1 population. In my judgment noth
ing can prevent Yaquina from be
ing one of the largest cities on the
Pacific coast. This is likelv to lie
the ease in the near future, for
with such depth, such ample room
for anchorage and handling the
largest vessels, the port proves its
capacity for the accommodation of
a vast amount of shipping. With
the development of the country
and the facilities for transportation
furnished by the railroad having
its terminus at this place, a large
shipping business is already com
menced, and the facilities both of
shipping and raiiroad are not at ail
commensurate with the freight

The ease of getting in and out of
the harbor here is remarkable. I
saw a steam tug to-day bring a
large three-masted schooner over
the bar in about five minute.
With the improvements of the bar
nan an nour sumces to tug ttie ar
riving vessel from the deep Pacific
to her station alongside the wharf,
and the same time will despatch
her, fully loaded, on her outward
voyage. Little towage is required
here, and w ith light harbor charges
this is the least expensive port on
the Pacific coast. Tlie steamships
of the Oregon Development Com
pany are running regularly between
here and San Francisco, and new
steamships of large tonnage are to
be put on at once.
The Oregon Pacific railroad is
now pushing its extension rapidlv
toward Boise City, Idaho, and
upon us completion there and its
connection with the transconti-
nental lines now rapidly building!
