Moses Foisom, representing the American Press Association an 1 the Chicago Newspaper Union is in the city. K. II. Thompson, of Portland, is in the city. It is whispered about that he is backing Eoff in the fout racje with Cameron. Otto Hallinger has lented the building adjoining the Postal Tele graph office, formerly occupied by J. W. Bentley, and will open next wteek a cigar, tobacco and notion store." The 100 yard foot-race between Cameron an Eoff which will be run at the fair grounds near the city this afternoon between the hours of 2 and 4 o'clock,- has attracted considerable attention. Eolf has been in training here for several days and Cameron will arrive this morning. Pools on the race sold last night in EofPs favor, but little selling was done. An woman Fonad m a P:t:ab! Condi- tion at Her Home on Railroad Street. Mrs. Ilutchius, an agoil wi.luw lady, has hcon living alum; in the j eastern portion oi the city for so.ne t;.iie. S'csterday morning a friend who happened to call at her home on Railroad street found the door locked, and could di.-cern no signs of life. Assistance was called and entrance ctlected by opening a window. It was found that the unfortunate old lady had fallen from the bed, breaking her hip and rendering her recovery, in her en feebled condition, very doubtful. Medical assistance was called, and she was rendered as comfortable a-; possible. Mrs. llutchins has a cL.im to some ptopeity, but has little means of support. Her hus band died a county charge some time ago. The neighbors and friends had endeavored to do everything possi ble to make her comfortable and keep her surroundings cleanly, but the enfeebled old lady refused to accepts such acts of kindness, and her surroundings have not been as sanitary as miirht be desired. They have now, however, taken the mat ter in charge and will see that she is properly cared for. John jiikI Jonathan. At a meeting of tne V. C. T. V. of this city held on Tuesday last the ladies decided to have Dr. Nourse. of Washington, D. C, give one of his popular lectures in Al bany, on Friday of this week, the L'Sth inst. In bringing this lectur er to this city the ladies of the Union do not expect to discharge the debt upon the hall by the lecture ot one evening, hut they expect and feel sure of giving the citizens of Albany a rare treat. Portland people were delighted with Dr. Nourse, and the Eastern press shower compliments upon him. In ISSiti the reporters said that the most brilliant and witty lecture delivered at Chautauqua was by Robert Nourse. The lecture to be delivered here is "John and Jonathan," the most taking oi his course. The following is one of the many compliments received: "After listening to many of the lecture courses of the city of Boston and other cities, it is considerable to say of Mr. Nourse, yet I can say it in all truth, that Mr. Nourse's lecture pleased and instructed me more than any other I ever had the pleasure of listening to in my life. The people are clamorous to hear him again, and I have engaged him tor two more lectures." Isaiah Brav. General Secretary Y. M. C. A., Oakland, Cal. The SI. diaries Hold Opened. It was announced that the St. Charles hotel would be opened to the public on Monday, but the work of refitting and furnishing the house having been completed eailierthan was expected.it was thrown open last night. The ele gant manner in which the hotel has been refitted and the modern improvements and conveniences which have been added to it, have been referred to by the IIkrald. Mr. Earl Race, the proprietor, is a thorough hotel man, and pro poses to run a first-class house. An elegant 'bus has been secured, winch made its first trip to the depot last night. The hotel is complete in all its apartments, as will be seen by the many who will visit it to-day. Will Open a Carriage Faelory. A. II. Black, manager of the Mitchell & Lewis Co., in this city, will remove to Portland Monday. His place here will be supplied by A. Burkhart has been given a position in the interior depart ment at Washington, D. C, and will leave next week with his family for that city, where they will in future reside. Special to the IIkralp. ai.em, Sept. '2m2. The weather to-day, the closing day of the Ore gon State Fair, was beautiful ami the track was in prime condition. The attendance was large, many people coming to w itness the last day's races. Nevada won the mile handicap run in 1 :4S'.. ; Bogus, I'd. Little Joe won the tool, '1 :'J0 class, in the fust, third and fourth heat. Condee won the second heat. Best time If The t w.i-yi ar-old trot was won by Blondy in two straight heats ; best time, if :4lf , besting the best Oregon two-year-old records. The two-vear-old run was won bv Tom O' Hiu a. The fair has been one- of the most siiceesMnl ever held, there being more and better horses than ever before collected on the Oregon lair grounds. The trains from the city and fair grounds to-night were crowded with people returning home. Fine Oregon I'eaehe. T. II. Cone returned yesterday from Ashland. He brought back some very fine peaches raised by S. Sackett of that place. One of them measured 12 inches in cir cumference,. They were placed on exhibition at the Fiist National Bank. Mr. Cone states that peaches from Ashland are being shipped to California, Montana and in fact al) over the Northwest. Oregon, it lias been discovered, can raise as line peaches as anv coun try. Recently the readers of the Her ald will remember Senator Dolph presented to the secretary of war a petition of the citizens of Cor vallis and vicinity, praying for an order for the expenditure of so much of the appropriation for the purpose as is necessary to reach the Willamette river above Corval lis to prevent the threatened cut off. The chief of engineers has approved the project for such im provement and directed the com mencent of work. Linn Comity llorso. The steam saw-mill which Myers & Hyatt are putting in on the Oregon Pacific railroad across the river south from Mehama is nearly ready for operation. They have a contract for three hundred thousand feet of square timber, and have placed the mill on the thirty-acre tract of land from which they expect to cut the timber. lor Sale. A special from Ottowa, Ontario, says thai a matter which may strongly tend to strengthen th- already strained relations between the Dominion and the United States has pre sented itself in connection with the limits of jurisdiction at points ad jacent to the boundary line between Alaska and British Columbia. The result of recent investigations re ported to the government heie show that valuable gold fields which have been discovered, and which are now being Worked, on the Yukon river, are in British and not United States territory, as has been supposed. The .-ld fields are represented to , be of great value. IS IT A TKtCk. A Lawyer of Indianapelis is Accused of a liold Lund Scheme. Bismarck (Dak.), Sept. 22. (i. AV. Smith, lawyer of Indianapolis, has oifere for record a quit claim deed from Oscar Swanson, of Liv ingston, Montana, to Win. Sweet for a quarter section of the town of Bismarck, or what might he called the east half of town. The consideration is only .fMOOO. The instrument purports to be the re confirmation of a saie made by Swanson on March 1M, 1872. The register of deeds refuses to record the deed, on the ground that it is a bold attempt to cloud the title of five or six hundred thousand dol lars worth of property, including half of the court house ground on Bailey avenue. Two ref ugees from the quarantine camp in Florida were arrested to-day by the health officers of the city and taken to North Brothers island, where they are kept close prison ers. The refugees came from an infected city, said to be Jackson ville. They had agreed voluntarily to undergo a ten days' quarantine 1 ef'ore continuing their journey. They broke die parole and came through by rail. The health au thorities here are in close tele graphic communication with the infected districts and will arrest all who are found violating the parole. BEPIBLICA.VS IS rOlNtll,. C. S. Senators Hold , vnctis and Malnre TlnjT rtS. Washington, Sept. 221 The re publican senators held a caucus from 10 a. m. to 2:'.Q p. m. to-day, about which they are more than ordinately reticent. It is given out that the territorial bills will be re stored to the head of the calendar for immediate consideration after the appropriation bills are disposed of, and Senator Sherman's trust bill is to follow. It is also said on goodauthority that the tariff adjust ment question and everything else in the range of immediate legisla tion will probably be discharged and no decision Aill be readied. A '-Neat Romance of "Sjs" Waldo j Or egon's Bard. Joaqim Miller, Joaquin Miller, on a recent ar ticle on the early days in Oregon, in the New York independent, says: 1 remember one "Sis'" Wahk the belle I think I mav write of her now, since I am told that she and all her bright little circle have crossed to the other side of darkness who claimed that she could outride any man living. And so by and by it some how came to be w hispered about and understood that should mar ry the man who would keep up with her, or rather, ride at her siiie irom i lie camp grounds to nvr i father's side home, some fifteen ! miles away. She was an heiress, i had splendid horses, and daily rode to and fro irom the camp grounds all alone. The story that she would marry the man who could catch her kept widening and crvstalizing till it became the cur rent talk of Oregon and Northern California. Suddenly on one fine summer, a handsome, dashin-j: voting Californian from the mines who had loads of gold, laid his plans and came early on the ground with a gallant mount de termined to carry .off the prize or perish. Interests became inten sely heightened in the affair when it became whispered aloud that Miss Waldo was not indifferent to the suit of the ardent, and dashing young miner from California. Don't blame him ! ! We did love horses so in Oregon in j those da's. And did he catch her and keep up with her? Win her and wed her? As a truthful chronicler I can only say that he did not wed her. Reports said that he once, during the desperate ride, came alongside of her, hut that she left him in stantly and for good, and that when she reached her father's home he was not even in sight of her. 1 have been told by one who claims to know, that the" lover had been drinking some in order to nerve himself for the hot work be fore him ; that although she was at first disposed not to escape him, yet when he came very near her she knew that all was not right ; and so she left the three white feet and the Californian behind her iu a flash and forever.
