A Marion county woman has
beat the record in "the hop field.

Burkhart testified that Potter had
told him that he knew who the
Albany correspondent of the Sitt
ings was but that he did not give
the name of the correspondent."

The St. Charles hotel will be
opened to the public on Monday
next. A Herald reporter was
shown through the building ves-
titteU and furnished it in elegant
style. There are 40 commodious
rooms in the building which have
been put in first-class order. All
of the princippl rooms and halls
are lighted by electricitv, and
speaking tubes extend from the
first to the second and third
stories. Each floor is provided
with water pipes and the closets
and bath rooms with hot and cold
water are conveniently located.
Fire escape ladders will" be placed
at the end of the halhvavs on the
west end of the building.' Commo
dious sample rooms have been
fitted up for the use of commercial
travelers, and the house in fact
has all modern improvements.
Mr. Race states that he proposes
to run a first-class house, and sup
ply the tables with the best the
market affords. The hotel is
pleasantly located, and from the
observatory on top of the building
a picturesque view of the city and
river is obtained.

East Saturday Archbishop Gross
visited all the Indians on the res
et vat ion, and Mimiay he preached
to them in the schoolhouse. He
had a mixed audience of bucks
sqi'-tws and their pappooses and
government oiiicials. At the con
clusion of the sermon, which oc
cupied an hour in its delivery, the
Indians crowded around the arch
bishop and complimented him
highly, at the same time extending
him an invitation to come again.
"Although many of the Indians
are at present engaged in hop pick
ing, I found more on the reserva
tion than 1 expected," said Arch
bishop Gross. "I was very much
pleased with everything I saw on
the resei vation, it is so well kept.
There are many houses on it, nuilt
and owned by Indians. There are
many Catholic Indians on the
reservation, and I have made ar
rangements so that they will have
services at least once a month."
Archbishop Gross is said to be
the first Catholic archbishop who
has ever visited the Siietz reser

vention of the republican clubs of
Oregon was called to order th's
afternoon at 2 o'clock, but on ac
count of the inclemency of the
weather and the postj onement of
the demonstrations tonight, a
large number of republicans had
gone home, hence tiie attendance
was not very large. The name of
M. L. Lane, of Salem, was entered
upon the records as delegate from
the Salem republican club. On
tiie nomination of Mr. Lane the
Mine of Hon. John G. Wright was
added to the executive committee
to represent Marion county. M.
G.Gritfin moved that the executive
committee be instructed to prepare
an address to be issued to the peo
ple of Oregon concerning the work
ings of the convention, which was
adopted by acclamation. By mo
tion of Hon. J. Lea sure the meeting
adjourned sine die.
Immediately Hon. M. C. George
called to order the members of the
executive committee to make ar
rangements preparatory to a gener
al adjournment.
Chairman George was instructed
to wiit-i an address to be extended
to the people of the state, and also
write a letter asking membership
f.r the state league in the national
republican league. On motion of
Secretary Miller the meeting ad
journed till the call ot the presi

The management deserve much
credit for the orderly manner in
which affairs are managed. A
fight occurred to-day on the track
when Van B. DeLashniutt ordered

and taken from the grounds and
not allowed to re-enter, which was
promptly done.
The exhibits of fine stock is
better than for many yeais. Some
of the best horses ever at the i-; -are
here now, and it is to be n

fered with the last day's races.

Tramping Expedition.

left Wednesday with Capt. Wi!
lard Young, via the west side rail
road, for Yaquina bay, where they
will look over ther harbor improve
ments. The party will overtake near
McMinnville the tramping expedi
tion which left the barracks at
Vancouver about a week ago under
command of Capt. McConniha.
The command includes companies
E and H rf (he Fourteenth in
fantry, and one platoon of artillery.
The object of the expedition is to
familiarize the troops with the
work of marching. The tramp
will cover about 400 miles of ground
and occupy something like a month
in its completion The route is by
various lines of march to Yaquina
and return, touching the sites of
old Fort Yamhill and Fort Hos
kins.
