Kenton has been endorsing all city orders piesented for pay ment "Not paid for wantof funds," which means that tlie city's treasury is empty. This condition of things is likely to continue until about January next, when some money will be received from licences. The trouble is not likclv i to be entirely relieved, however, I until the next tax lew. In the meantime a considerable amount is eing expended in sewers, and ttiere is a new lire engine to pay lor. The city is likely to have to figure pretly closely to prevent a greater amount of indebtedness ! than can be paid by the amount received from the next tax levy. Hoj Firkins in l.ane oimlj. Eugene City Register: Hop picking has begun in many of the yards of Lane county, and others will soon follow, (j rowers are many of them contracting their hops at 12'o cents per pound, which enable them to realize a fair proiit on the year's work, if the crop can be gathered at a price for picking, which will afford good wages for all engaged. There are about 1000 acres of hops in Lane county that will yield 1,000,000 pounds, which will bring $125,000 into the county. There is no other industry of considerable importance at the present time that distributes the income so perfectly. The whole of it remains among our citizens instead of being sent away for expensive machinery. The labor o: picking is pleasant and healthful, and every family in the county that can spaie any of its members should engage in it and obtain a part in the "distribution. It is within the power of our own citizens to gather the entire crop, and if they fail they can have no cause for complaint if the labor is imported and the wages carried away from the county. Neither will the improvident have cause to complain if the merchants decline to trust all those who allow a time of good wages to pass unimproved. The busy bees will always obtain the honev. from lhe anlinm. Mr. Angell, who has charge of the work on the Capital mine, came down from the Santiam yes terday after an additional foice of men and a pump to lift the water i out of the shaft which is being sunk in the main tunnel. The shaft is now about twelve feet deep and being near the Santiam and below tiie level of the river, fills with water, and pumping out is necessary to allow the continuance of work. The quality of the rock now being taken out of the shaft becomes harder and harder, which is considered an encouraging sign. Mr. Angeli says they have already taken out alarge quantity of quartz. IXo is awaiting the return of President Wright from Astoria so as to secure the pump and men. Salem Statesman. A Queer Haul, A queer catch from Y.oiuina was j unloaded at the depot yesterday i way-billed to parties in Salem. It t consisted of a sea serpent, a devil j fish, a cuttle fish and some other i curiosities of the briny deep. The ! thing called a sea serpent when ! stretched out was about six or eight feet long and resembled a snake or lizard except its head, which looked more like that of a seal. They were caught by fishermen at Yaquina and will be taken to Salem and will probably be pineed on exhibition at the state fair. The serpent was an ugly looking fellow calculated to produce a shudder on the part of those who saw it, and to produce bad dreams for a week. Hrawned In 1 ouiigs River. Sunday night at 6 o'clock, J. A Chamber lain with four others was coming down Youngs river in a small boat. He was in the bow and stood up when lie fell over in th" water, f lis comrades tried to save him, but before he could lie taken out, he was dead. He has a sister that is married and living in Portland. He was working for J. II. Smith & Co. in a logging camp and was well liked by all. French keeps railroad time. The steamer Willamette Valley from Yaquina bay, when thirty five miles noi th west of Point Reyes .Monday morning, was going ahead at a moderate rate of speed, dur ing a thick fog. when tiiose on board of lit r observed a vessel ahead. The fog was so thick tiiat they were unable to see any more than half a miie ahead. The ciptains at once ordered the helm put to starboard, and the two vessels passed. The steamer ju.-t grazed the port bumpkin with her .-larboard quar.er bulwarks, ('apt. Telle of the steamer ordered the steamer around, and siie steamed back to the vessel, which proved to be a bark. Those on the latter vessel announced that tha vessel was not damaged, and the steamer proceeded to port. . Political History of Orison, J. Henry Brown, of Portland, is' in tie city collecting data for a book of Oregon political statistas, which he is preparing to publish, to be entitled, "Brown's Political History of Oregon." Preparation of the book is far advanced, and Mr. Brown expects to publish it during the coming winter. It will be a volume of about 800 pages, and will contain a great amount of valuable matter, such as all of the party platforms in different years, complete election statistics", the different party isues. etc. It will be a valuable w ork. SI oyer, Dillon ami Hyatt have secured a cou .ract from the officials of the Oregon Pacific railread, and will put in -a steam saw mil! on the Linn county side of the Santiam, uear Mehania, to make lumber to be used upou the construction of the ra Inad. The new school house at Halsey will be dedicated on Friday even ing, Sept. 21st. State Supt. E. ti. McElroy and several other distin guished" educators will be present, refreshments will be served bv the Y. W. C. T. L, and a very large attendance, and a grand occasion for the people of Halsey is promised. The new school building is a neat sructure and a valuable adjunct to the town. Preparing; KeportK. The railroad companies all over the country are busily engaged preparing the first annual state ment to the interstate commerce commission. Tiiis voluminous statement has to be handed to the commission by the fifteenth of this month, and involves considerable work. tV.C. T. I lOBtmilon The district convention of the W. C. T. U. will be held at Leb anon on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, in . the Presbyterian church. Iliiisboro aud Portland to visit their children the coming week, and on Slonday the 17th inst, they will leave Port laud for a two-months' trip to Iowa. Burr, arrested and examined before a justice at Shedd for a charge ol robbing an old gentleman named Baldwin of $140 near Peoria last Saturday, were acquitted, there being no evidence showing that they committed the robbery. Baldwin had drawn the money from the First National Bank in this city, and while in Peoria in dulged in a drunken spree. When he came to himself his money was gone, some one having robbed him. It was attended by a smail but very apprecia'ive aud ience. To night Miss Colin will give another entertainment, at th same place, making an entire change of programme. The price of admission will be 25 cents, and all students and school children of the city will be admitted lor ten cents. Miss Colin is an elocution ist of rare ability and deserves a 'arge audience.
