A very good slack wire jerform er named Clivette gave a free ex hibition on the street yesterday, while his manager rustled for the nickels and dimes. Mrs. James F.lkins and family started last Thursday for Albany, where sne goes to put the children in college. Mr. Elkins will remain f on the ranch at Beawr. Ochoco Keview. The Juvenile opera company will give a special matinee .Satur day afternoon, producing the cel ebrated opera "Pinafore." This is a fine chance for parents to send their children to see a first-class performance. The Juvenile opera company of fvan Francisco will give one per formance and a matinee in this city Saturday, September loth. This is the same Juvenile opera company which scored such a great success in Portland and other rorthern cities last season, and of which the Oregonian said, "Al though children they are equal to any opera company that ever ap peared in Portland." There arrived in Portland Satur day forenoon from Vancouver two , companies, r, and it, oi tne roiir- teeth miantiy, a detachment of cavalry ami two pieces of artillery. The purt- is composed oi aoout one hundred men and is attended by four wagons, an ambulance and thirty horses and mules. Col. McCom'oe, Cap:. Kilboiirnc, assistant surgeon I'. S. A", and i Lieut's liasson, Masten. Eastman. Lest and Todd are the officers in charge of the expedition. To is is to be the mot extensive trip that has yet been taken by the soldiers. They will visit all the principal places on tiie west bide, making their turning point at Va quina hay. Last vtar the expedi tion passed through Linn count v and proceeded up the east side. lhe party expects to be gone about thirty days, and the object of their trip is to acquaint themselves with the coast country and the lines ol march leading to and along it. Col. McConihe, in reference to this, Said: "Really there is not enough actual knowledge possessed by the military forces of the topo graphy of the coast country, and it is desired to get them "so well acquainted with that district that they would not be iost if necessity called them there. 1 do not sup pose that their services are apt to e needed very soon, of course, but there are a great many advan tages to be gained by tuch a trip. The party will camp out everv night and march all the way, so the men will have a chance to learn what some of the inconven iences of a soldier's life are. A neer Wager. According to an article that ap peared in the Jacksonville Lung and Liver Cure, a prominent democrat bought 1,200 head of sheep at a price, on contract, of 1,200 and in case Harrison is elected will pay $1,200 more. The Harrison man when asked why he should sell on those terms, stated, that if Mr. Cleveland was elected, he considered he had received a eood conpensation for his sheep, but if Mr. Harrison was elected, the democrat could afford to pay the balance, $1,200. The democrat wh n asked about the matter .-tated, that if Mr. Cleveland was elected, he had paid all the sheep were worth, but if Mr. Harrison was elected, he could afford to pay the $1,200. (The above we publish by re quest. Ed. The Yiiqnina Khcrnicn's Trouble. A gentleman from Yaquina states that the striking salmon fishermen at Yaquina still hold out for higher wages. They held a meeting Saturday night, and de cided not to fish for less than 3 cents per pound for whole fish and 4 cents for dressed 'fish. The cannery of Baker & Hays has ac ceded to the demands of the fish ermen, and Sundav night 20 boat loads of fine salmon were brought in at 3 cents. The other canneries otter onlv 25 cents each for silver- side saimon and 50 cents for Chinook. They say they will pro cure fishermen from abroad and defend their boats with Winches ter rifles if necessary, the union fishermen having threatened to put a stop to any fishing by non union men. Uare Tliieve t'aptared Sheriff Combs, of Crook county, has received won! from Jas. Slater, who had gone in search of Kufus Smith and a man named Reed, ciiarged with stealing horses from T. 15. James, that he had over taken them at Siuslaw and had them in the custody of the sheriff of Lane countv. Mr. Combs started Thursday morning after the prisoners. Smith is the fellow mentioned in the Herald two weeks ago as having left the coun try with horses belonging to Mr. James. The Sad Death of a Mother While Suffering from Temporary Aberration. S'fhe Salem Statesman of Sunday says : About :i o'clock this morn ing a message was brought to the Statesman ollice that Mrs. W. I). Wheeler, wife of the former Court sire:t butcher, had left the home oi ner faiher. Mr. iiruwn, on the coiner of Mill and Winter streets, while temporarily insane, and had drowned herself. A reporter went to tlie scene of the tragedy and found the facts sis follows: Aboiw ten days ago Mrs. Wheeler gave hirth to a child, and since that time she has been insane, and has constant lv required the eiiort of required several parties to keep her irom carrying out a threat to destroy her life. About 10 o'clock last ni-ht she quieted down and went to sleep, so that her watchers relaxed their vigilance. About 12 o'clock she was missed from her room, and a search party was immediately organized. At about twenty minutes to 2 o'clock her body was found lying in Miii creek, close to the bauk,1i few feet from the Winter-street bridge. Her head was barely covered with water, and it is thought she was killed by the fall on to the rocks. She was clad only in a night robe and hose, and had no doubt left home while insane, and in her wanderings had fallen over the bank. Dr. Jessup was immediately summoned, and did all in his power to resuscitate ner, but with out avail. She was about 38 years of age, and leaves a husband and several children, among them the young habe. LMIIKt: AMI KKAIH.W. Programme of Geo. Cable, the celebrated elocutionist, will deliver a lecture at the opera house in this city on Thursday evening, Sept. 13," and render selections in reading from his own writings. A sound of drums. Narcisse. 4. Mary's night ride. Death of On ihr Orrgu Pacific. Track-laying on A. Brink's con tract has been suspended for a few days on account of a piece of rock work. This cut. is now finished and track-laying will at once be commenced again. The comple tion of this cut leaves 25 miles of level grading, requiring only the laying of ties and rails to complete the road. The work is being vigor ously pushed all along the line. The Sunt in ui Mine. Ex-Gov. Chadwiek says that in mining matters as well as in scen ery "distance lends enchantment to the view." He believes that if the Capital mine with its actual and prospective richness were away off in the Okangan country, in stead of near at hand, on the San tiam. it could be easily sold for $50,000. When will our people judge of things truly on their merit? Horses nying. From Crook county comes the complaint that the horses in that section are afflicted with a kind of fever, which has a similar effect as the typhoid with the human fam ily. A young man named Bayles died at the residence of relatives on the Santiam, nearly onposice of Mehama, on Sunday .after a linger ing illness of eonVmiption. He was in indigent circumstances, and was cared for bv relatives, and buried by them. Thrown from a Wason. M. C. Callaway, living near this city, while driving to this citv ves terday was thrown from a' high seat, cutting a severe gash in his head. The i'elay was caused by the train be ing thrown from the track four miles below Red Bluil' Sunday morning. Six cars left the track. The accident was caused by a broken rail.
