In the consideration of the ques tion of whether we are creatines of the brief period of physical exist ence that takes place beneath our human vision, or whether mind is equal or superior to matter, it is not amiss to take into view the facts of this physical world of ours. Popular Science says that in chem ical operations, whether natural or artificial, matter is often "lost to night;" hut the veriest tyro has learned, as one of the fundamental axioms of science, that it can never be actually lost or destroyed. In its manifold mutations it often disappears from our vision ; but it reappears, or can be made to re appear, as palatable to our sense as before. If a piece of silver be put into nitric acid, a clear and ) coiorless liquid, it is rapidly dis- solved, and we "'see it no more." The solution may be mixed with water, and apparently no effect is produced. Thus, in a pail of vai er we may issolve liity dollars' worth of silver, not a particle of which can be seen. Not even the chemist, unless he should apply certain tests to detect its presence, would, by merely looking at the liquid, guess what hidden wealth it con tained. Other metals, as we know, can be treated in similar ways with the same result. When charcoal and many other substances are burned, they disappear as com- j pletely, no visible asneseven oeing loft from the combustion. In fact, every material which is visible can, by certain treatment, be rendered invisible. Matter which in one state or condition is perfectly opaque, and will not permit a ray of light to pass through it, Avid in another iorin become perfectly transparent. The cause of this wonderon fnanim in muttpr is : Utterly inexplicable. Philosophers j may say that it is due to some al- teration in the position or arrange ment of atoms or molecules; but 4itoms and molecules, however con fident, we may be concerning their existence and the laws that govern their mutual attractions and re pulsions, are absolutely beyond i'jP.. "f our senses. We may se the substances they form, we may guess at changes they under go; but -'e can not see them, or do anything more than guess what they really are. We do know, however, that matter is indestruct- evidence that it can be destroyed. The substances dissolved in water or burned in the air are not anni hilated or lost; by certain well known means they can be recovered and restored to sight ; some in ex- f actly the same state as before their j invisibility, others in some other j " . . . I state or condition in which we none j the less surely recognize 'him On the brightest and sunniest day millions of tons of black charcoal in an invisible condition are float ing in the air. Millions of plants are at the same time restoring it to visible form by the chemical processes going on in the tiny laboratory of every leaf that ex pands in the sunshine. In the coarse of time the leaf, or the wood it elaborates by its delicate al chemy, may be burned ; and this cycle of change may go on indeh- nitelv, the matter becoming visi ble and invisible again and again. ;;)oes not these fact3 of the physical world carry strong argument with r it tor the indestructibility of mind, for is not mind paramount to matter? A singular incident attending the re-nomination of President Cleveland, is that the most enthu siastic expressions of approval -ome from the tory journals of England, whose only object and interest is to fatten upon the down fall of American institutions. They even sjo so far as to suggest mat ne oe eiecieu to a nam icim )our years hence. The Chronicle j says: "This being so, a person j who had purchased from the st.ite ! 100 acres of land which had been listed to the state in lieu of part oi one of those uuder-water stc-iiuis, was decideil by Acting Commis sioner tocksiager to be entitled to perfect her possibly defective title, under the Booth act of 13H7, by paying to the United States $1 .25 an acre for her land. This in itself was right enough, b it the decision readied mucn lurther than was at! first apparent. Having held that the party in question could pur chase direct from the United States nncer the act of 1S77, the 'iext and naturally resulting step was the cancellation of the selection bv the I commissioner that is, the United ! States took back the land from the j state and sold it to that party. the state having thus been di vested of one-half its hit indem nity land "election for the township in question, would be entitled t" make a new selection of 160 acres to make good the apparent loss; and, taking quick advantssre of this ruling of Stockslager, a land bureau in this city, which, bv some means, has a strong intii:- ence with the land office, has laid its wires to get h(dd of at lea.-tj 50.000 acres of srovprnmpnt IstuI i C " 7 without any homestead or pre emption trouble or delay.
