pany, and before it was gotten
under control the building, con
taining 135 horses (all of which,

stroyed. In the rear end of the
stable was a small building con
taining eight horses, all of which
were safely taken out. Seven lire
men wire badly burned in their
humane work. The building was

was done in effect, for the unfor
tunate man was permitted to
marry the .vomah of his choice,
and then both were banished to
Paris, where they lived under the

Oregon's Population.
Year by year there is a steady and
heavy gain in the population of the
state. This is apparent in the vote
cast at successive general elections.
In June 1886, tho total vote was 54,
654. It will now exceed (30,000.
Multnomah county alone increases
her vote about 1500 in two years.
It is apparent that throughout the
state the increasing vote is propor
tionately republican. In 1S80 the
total vote of Oregon was 40,816.
The census of that year mrde the
population 174,768, The same ratio
would indicate a present population
of 294,000 but as the number of fam
ilies, in proportion to , voters, is
steadily increasing, we judge the
nomilation of Oregon may now be
275.000.

he hud it attached to a shaft drum
round which a rope was wound,
and that even with this small
model a power was developed

that no dams, sluiceways or. other
expensive constructions are neces
sary. Any numuer ol wheels can
be laid down right in the bed" of
the riyer and attached to the same

lie at the bottom of the river. A'l
those who examined the wheel
were of the opinion that it was a
good invention and of great prac
tical value.

those of more ponderable gas, oil, or
water. Its quantity measured in
units called coulombs, may be con

in volts, analogous to pounds per

to cubic feet of a vessel for holding
fluids, while the strength of current,
measured in amperes, find no ana ogue
in fluid nvjaaurements, though this is
perhaps the most important of all,
and furnishes the fundamental unit of
the whole system. Another very
important quantity is the resistance
of Ixidies to the flow of electricity,
which may be cotnpared.qualitative

which fluids experience in . flowing
through pipes, and is measured in
ohms.
