Ixoianai'olis, May 31. The gal
leries were crowded when Chair
man St. John rapped the prohibi
tion convention to ordej-.
The convention immediately
proceeded to get to work on the
rule limiting debate on the suff
rage -question, those most interested
in this probable plank in the plat
form objecting strongly to so se
rieusly circumscribing the debate.
The rules ere finally adopted as
reported. A special motion by the
JKew York delegate to limit the de
bate on the suffrage plank to
three hours was defeated, and the
report of the committee on finance
was presented. It recommends the
adoption of the national commit
tee's plank already formulated Jfor
assessment by the states, with an
additional provision that volunteer
contributions be taken in conven
tion. The report was adopted.
The convention next proceeded to
the collection of voluntary contri
butions, and there was seen one of
those enthusiastic occurrences pe
culiar to prohibition conventions.
Many contributions were received
n amounts ranging from $2000
t own, and will aggregate $25,000.
One thousand dollars was contrib
uted by R. H. McDonald, of Cali

Buffalo (N. Y.), May 31. The
people of Loekport are highly
scandalized because Mrs. John

The parties were married four

Mrs. Annie Cobb, who was at one

It is a little cottage in Whitney

A Dakotan and a Texan who mef;
in Chicago were disputing about the
greatness of their respective districts,
and among other thing traded marvel
ous stories about the work of the

does a Texas nortber blow?" asked
the Dakotan at last.
"How fast? Well, the only thing
that will measure it is lightning.
When a Texas norther is coming they
telegraph ahead, so people can get
underground, but when it gets under
good headway it will just about run a
neck-and-neck race with the telegram.
How fast's a Dakota blizzard?"
Oh, you can t measure a blizzard.
xnere s notning like it. i ve seen , a
hlizzard shin a telegraph message
right off the wires and carry it on
ahead. I never saw ' but one the
speed of which could be measured.
There seemed to be something the
matter with that one. It went rather
slow, only 'bout a million miles 'a
second, and we couldn't tell what
was the matter with it until it went
by, when we found it was dragging
one of those infernal Texas northers
along behind."
