THE MOHXINGr IIET?AL.T). SUXDAY. MAY 27, 1888. Bx.PUBLICANPI.ATIO 11. We, your committee gn Platfor and Ke solutions beg leave to repor as follows: The Republicans in the State of Oresron.n convention assembled, re affirming their allegiance to, and con ridence iu, the great Republican party, of the nation, of whose grand . achievements and long and success ful administration of the government of the United 8trtes they have so much cause to be proud, and the glory of which they are entitled to show, nw make and present the fol jowiiig statement of their principles and policy : First A Ve favor honest and cient administration of the depart ments of government both State and National. e,.1n.) The right r.f the cit'zen authorized by law, an."1, to hive his vote honorably counted, ouyht to be respected and all efforts to control r limit that right deserves the con demnation of all good citizens. Third That while disclaimin right to interfere with the adminis tration of the internal affairs oi for eign nations, we sincerely approve the efforts of Irish and English statesmen to secure by peaceful methods the American principal of "Home Rule" for Ireland. Fourth That we are in favor of such legislation as should prohibit and punish the manufacture of adul terated foods. Fifth That we are in favcr of the enactment of a law by Congress, wheieby the homestead and pre-emption rights of settlers shall not be forfeited by cancellation of filings by the land department when settlement or filings are made in good faith. ixtii Thatwefwor the enoDtir aeement and development of our State by the construction of railroads ,pl re the refusal of President Cleve land to approve the river and harboi bill, and we denounce the action o! the Sec etary of War in what seenir to be a studied attempt to delay the improyement of the Columbia river: and fully recognizing the importance of our fireat waterways as regulators of freight charges, not only on the waterways themselves but on the railroads as well, we insist that our great rivers should be free a id open to the sea, and nve demand of the general government need of appro priations therefor. At the same time ;ve recommend the uext Legis lature to take proper and adequate stens to insist at once in opening the ! effi- i gre.it river to general commerce. i Lastly denounce the civ i j service reform professions of Presi l dent Cleveland as a sham and frau-i, j as promises made to secure votes be fore election, and the violations oi which has been as i:onstatit us t! e hunger of the Democratic office-seekers could demand. THE MARKETS. The whoat market still has a buoyant tone, the price remaining at 62. and 05 cents. The general tone of the market as regards most of the staples is one of unrelieved dullness. The backwardness of the season im poses a check upon distribution of goods in all departments of trade which depend upon weather con ditions. The dullness which pre vails, however, is not of a kind to occasion uneasiness ; although the movement of commodities is slug gish, the underlying conditions are and other systems of transportation j healthful and when business is relieved of the impediments which temporarily restrict it, it will flow perhaps iu fuller volume than for months before. and that we hold all corporations to be strictly responsible to their liabil ities under the law, and recognize the right of the Legislature to enact all reasonable limitations on corporate power. Seventh That we regard the further immigration into the United States of Chinese laborers as directly - opposed to the interests of American labor; and we therefore heartily. ap prove the action of the Ke'publican Senate in providing by proper legis lation for so amending our treaties with China as to prevent their fur ther immigration here. Eighth We recognize that the nation owes a debt to the surviving veterans of the icoedion winch can not be adequately repaid, and hold-to to be the duty of the general govern ment t provide for the necessities of them and theirs by prompt payment of liberal pensions. Ninh That the action of Presi dent Cleveland in ordering the return of the rebel Hags was an unwarranted assumption of the right to use tor political purposes the trophies of a valor he did not possess and the fruits of a victory he did not help to secure. Tenth While we approve every honest effort to preserve our public lands by the punishment of willful trespasses up 11 them, and are in fayor of such measures as will en courage our citizens to settle upon anu improve them, we condemn the action of the present administration in its preti'ndtd efforts to protect such lauds tinier color of which, in stead of pursuing the policy of the Republican administration by caus ing the arrest and punishment of those only whoa actions appeared to have been dishonest and criminal. It has refused to cause said lands to be surveyed, thereby (Msjouraging their settlement by pepple needing and de siring to take them. The adminis tration also filled the country with a horde of officers styling themse ves "Special Agents of the Interior De partment,'7 w ho have been made to act as spies ami informers upon such of the honest citizens as have ven tured to settle upon the public lands for the purpose of carving for them selves hollies in the wilderness and has caused the arrest of houcst set tlers upon those lauds upon charges false and infamous, and publicly branding them as robbers and thieves has caused them to be dragged into both the civil and criminal courts to be tried upon false and fictitious charges, thereby compelling them to in;ur the expense of two defenses against the same act; has caused these same special agents to raise fiuestious and dispute the right of honest citizens to require title to the public lands upon which they have honestly and in good faith settled Mid for which they have paid their money, and acting upon M.e sugges tion of these agents the olhcials hav ing such matters in charge have under the direction of the administration, like a court organized to convict, de d rived the settler of his land, robbed htm of the benefit of his labor and refused to return his money; and thae wrongs. have been perpetuated - so-called Democratic reiorm. Eleventh That the policy of the Democratic administration, which would place wool anil lumber on the free list and woolen goods on the highly protected list, cotton printson the f-ee list, and other similar arti cles; hoop iron on the prot-cted list; and which policy would continue the collection . of S50, 000,000 on sugar each vear, while at the same time the majority applaud the claim to carry out the President's idea that a tariff tax is robbery of the people, consti tutes a piece of unparelled political mshonesty, havire for its sole object the success of the Democratic party at the next electio.. even at the ex pense of the radical destruction of many of our most important agricul tural an. I manufacturing industries. Twelfth We favor the policy of providing, chiefly tcr the revenues of the general government and for the pnrposes essential to the general gov ernment, a system of cities levied wpon imports so adjusted as to dis criminate in favor of domestic indus tries and productions and in favor of American labor, and we declare in ivor of reducing the annual surplus revenues of the government by ad mittin gfree of duty such articles of general use as cannot be largely pro duced or manufactured by our own people. ., , Thirteenth That we deprecate the attempts of the Djinocrati-J adminis tration to degrade the honest toil of America to a level with the pauper labor of the old world. fourteenth We denounce and de- PURE QffiMSi gits- Superiorexcelleir.-e proven in millions of honied for more than ii iu:iiter o a ecu1 ry.
