There is a disposition on the part of certain lofty-minded edi tors to deprecate the recent voca! combat in the senate, and to read nice lectures to our statesmen upon the duty of gravity and forbearance in their processes of debate. To a certain extent, such criticism is always in order, of course. Hardly a day; passes that there is not room for complaint as to congressional affenses against dignity and good taste. But when this is said the fact remains, we may as well ac knowledge, that the people enjoy a personal contest between a couple of plucky and fluent political lead ers a good deal more than they do the (Customary order of profound and monotonous discussion. They like to see man put to the test of cour ige, and the competition of in tectdal vigor and alertness which such encounters imply. It is not true that they think more of a statesman who declines to defend himself when he is personally assailed than thev do of one who I accepts the challenge and returns blow ! for blow. They like a man who ipn't afraid, and who doesn't avoidjdanger by permitting others to accuse or deride him at their pleasure. Even if he get'' the 'WO'St of it as he is sometimes bound to do it is better for him to have fought and been whipped than not to have fought at all. This phase of popular feeling has prevailed at all times in our his tory. We ara a combative people and take delight in spectacles of contention, from a senatorial battle down to an ordinary dog-fight. It is an affectation to say that we are I scandalized when two statesmen grapple f r a trial of strength on personal grounds, and proceed to pummel each other to the best f their ability. The truth is we j ad an re their bravery and their en- ! ergy, and watch the struggle with the keenest inteiest. The scene in the senile the other day when Messrs. Ingalls and Voorhees made an auiohitheater of that august chamber was not unprecedented, by aiy means. Similar exhibi tions have repeatedly taken place there not merely in our latter' days of alleged political decadence, but also in former times wtiicn we are accustomed to cite for their! KinWinr virtue and their elorv of rel giants. There has never been a time whea either branch of con gress was bo thoroughly impreg nated with the spirit of peace and patience that men would not pro voke and resent personal affronts in language of the most vivid and vitrolic description. And there has never beeu a time when the people failed to take an attentive and encouraging view of perform ances of that sort. It may be that this is, a sign of serious fault in our civilization. Perhaps we thus onvit ourselves of the late Matthew Arnold's charge, that we are sajdlyjwanting in the matter of sweetness and light. But there is as much reason to believe on the other hand is there not? that it is only a manifestation of that in trepid and aggressive national instinct by whicd all our victories have beei achieved and all ouV fame accomplished. As a piece of rhetorical eloquence Cot. John P. Irish's suppfh u-:i9 n ! , , .. . SUCCeas, DUt lie (lia not attempt to explain why the proposed "tariff! reduction that he anl Grover I , , . . , , ; Cleveland want tlie people of Ore-! gon to adopt, takes the tariff oil" o;, j and cheapens the price of wool. I , ' ' lumber and the products the poor; man nas 10 sen, ai;u Keevs tne t a. 7 I .1 :d kee-.s the tarifl'on read' made woolen ro m!.--, sugar, lice, and the products tho poor jinan has to buy. urrfi Col. Irish finds an entire new e for Cleveland's veto of the river and harbor biii. It is he-eats there were two biiis, one in each session of the 49th congress. Um, an! most extraordinary wisdom. Yes, to be sure, there are a few more people in- a thickly populated city than there are in a sparsely settled country, and naughty con gress should not have done so, but all the same intelligent voters will withhold giving their franchise to the man who throttled our river and harbor improvement, with a large available surplus in the treas ury. TEMPEEANCE NOTES. Contributed by the W. C. T. U.l Mrs. M. B. Reese, one of the national organizers of the W. 0. T. U., was recently stri :ken down with acute rheumatism at Yreka, Cal., where she had gone to begin the work of organizing northern le.il. After several days of great suTering she was taken back to Seattle, where she remained in Grace hospital until a few days since. he has now returned to her home on Bashor island, and al hough weak and crippled, is not suffering. Hopes are entertained that she will be able to resume her work in the near future. Among other interesting features of the State Sunday School Con vention, held during the past week was a plea for tiie teaching of temperance in our Sabbath schools, by Mrs. L. P. Round, of this city. She earnestly urged the teachers to post themselves upon temperance as taught in the bible that they might be able to meet and contro vert the manv misrepresentations of the sacred word upon this j question, and also to enable them ! to instruct the children in the cor-1 rect principles of gospel temper ance. One of the greatest perils to the i public health at the present time ! is undoubtedly the widespread use of tobacco, chewing and smoking, specially by the young. Dr. II. M. Fussell, writing of what he designates as "tobacco heart," says: "Of the cases of heart j disease recently treated in the I writer's room at the dispensary, i nine were diagnosticated as i functional disorders due to the ex cessive use of tobacco. All the nine cases occurred in young men between the ages of seventeen and i twenty-seven years. The tobacco was used in all the cases in the form of chewing, the amount rang ing from half a pound to one pound a week. The habit of chewing was begun early in life in all the cases; m one case at the age of nve years ; the oldest age noted at ; which chewing was begun was ' twelve years; the average was I seven years." In each case the i treatment included the prescrii- '. tion of "total abstinence from the j use of tobacco." In multitudes of ; cases where functional disorders of the heart do not develop, a morbid j appetite is created, craving alco-! holic beverages, and with many i leading directly to inebrietv. In- creasingly great is the need of an effective anti-tobacco crusade. NEW TO 1 AX. For Snle. 1 FINE DEXTEB SPRING TOP BCGGY, TV for one or two horses. Inquire at the Herald office.
