In physiology, however, the great
est practical use photography has
been put to is in the study of loco
motion. The various movements
performed in the acts of waiking.rur,
p.ing, and leaping, both in man and
in the horse, aim, also, more recently
in the flight of bird, have been
studied by means of instantaneous
photographs, taken at the rate of ten
per second.
Marcy. in France, and Muybridge,
in England, who are in the van of
this method of research, obtain photo
chronegraphii; pictures which show
not only the hmbot a mammal, or the
wing oi a bird in the various positions
it aesumes during flight, but also its j
positions in space and time. The
images thus obtained can he placed
in tne zoetrouc, and by thus rccoin
posing them the impiession of a
mammal i umiing or a bird flying is
obtained.
Marey goes so far as to hope that
by photo-chronography we may f.r
rive at a true knowledge of the
physical condition of flight, and that
possibly then, and then only, wid
flying-machines be constructed with
some probability of success. This

It is ini'ortant and interesting to
note that at the meeting of the
New England Insurance Exchange,
held at Boston on March .'11, a vote
was paised giving a reduction in
tne Exchange tariff, tor ths use of
electric lights, under the icuuired
cwuditions. A reduction of 10
cents is made for incandescent
lights used in. establish men t
enumerated
in the ordinary
scheduie or list, and of 5 cents for
arc lights. With regard to this
significant actioD, Mr. S. E. Barton,
who is the chairman of the electric
light committee, ami is wei) known
to electric light men in connection
with this special branch of insur
ance work, says: "This is. the
actiou referred to in my Pittsburgh
paper, which seems to strike the
electric heart in a tender spot. I
think it cannot r.ow lie said that
we do not believe in our own
position, nor that we are unvilling
to acknowledge, in a substantial
way, the Uenelitj ami improvements
which we claim are the result of
our enforced inspection. If the
electric light interests couii secure
similar inspection throughout the
country and pay fur it, they would
most surely reap, in time, 'benefits
such as we believe they will reap
